I recently got a member named buddha that logged in a week ago and got to PMing people. I thought it was strange that he was PMing for HOURS so I googled for his IP, email, username etc. I found three sites out there that had him pegged as a spammer so I temp banned him for a week with a request to contact me explaining his activities and to prove he was not just spamming.
Today his ban expired and he simply logged back in and began PMing people again (and not me) so now he's banned forever.
I have deleted his out-going PMs (it seems that's actually an option in the ACP).
Do you think I handled this correctly, and how do you deal with PM spammers?

Trash all their sent PMs, Delete the member, than IP ban. That's how deal with them.
Your best bet is to have a promotion where newly registered members cannot PM until they have 3 or 5 posts.

funny you should post about this guy. He had been sitting PM'ing every member on http://www.esyndicat.com/forum/ for the last 24 hours straight (is still on now but hidden).
Do you have his IP so we can do a pre-empted ban...

I will not break the privacy policy on my forum, not even for a spammer...
but they may have it here: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1422803
It's also discussed here: http://www.weathermania.us/archive/index.php?t-5206.html which is where I first verified he was a spammer.

ip ban hardly never works. Most can and will manipulate their ip. The ip's you ban could be shared among others and while you think your banning one spammer, your in fact banning a few people.. atleast until they rotate off that particular ip addy.
Promotions are the best options

This is what happens to me...the members or spammers sign up under such names as 'hghdklf' they post some pretty crook images and content and then bail. I ban their IP and email, just to be safe and they re-register the next day under another name 'ksldfjsdlkf' and complete the whole process over and over again...then i get members complaining that they have been blocked too. It's a consistent mess.
PM Spam is also annoying. People register and post 5 times, random off topic posts and then start PM'ing members about their latest deals or what-not.
It's definantly a problem, i think you'd all agree. But other then the measures we are taking no much can be done about it...i have of late installed a mod called NOIP, if it recognises an IP address that is banned etc they are not even aloud to access the registration screen..i found it on little mod site on page 5 of a google search

Theres a hack for reading members PM's while it is not a good habit, this would be a great purpose.
