List of forum spamming techniques

I thought it might be useful to build a list of techniques spammers use to spam forum websites.

If your member list is public:
Set up a profile with spammy links in the website and signature locations and then never post to avoid detection.
Put URLs in other areas where it doesn't resolve to a link with vB software. But when a spider sees <a href="http://www.spammydomain.com">Spammy text</a>, does it know the difference?

If links are not obvious in the text:
Place links on keywords even if no-one will click because the link isn't obvious - (I've done this myself on some sites :o But if you use a lousy css design where linked text is not obvious, it's part your fault too).

If you can edit your own posts:
Come back after the post has been approved and edit in all the stuff you didn't want the moderator to see.

That should be enough for a start. Why not add any other techniques you're aware of. It'll help all of us know what to keep an eye out for.

I definitely get a handful of spammers that create a seemlingly geniune post, and then edit it a week later to contain their link(s). Fortunately, my mods are top notch and always catch them. Immediate ban in this case, because that's purposely deceptive.

If you allow new members to PM with zero posts, spammers will register and then start PM'ing your users "behind the scenes." A loyal community can help stop these - especially the clever ones that know to avoid Admins and Mods in their spamming.

Posting only in resource threads/stickies (my forum has a resource thread stuck in several boards, I've seen people register just to get a link in the sticky).

Ending posts with "PM me <email link>" while most are innocent, I've seen some that have been set up just to get emails, or to at least forward links.

Many of these spammers are using XRumer Gold, a program available at botmaster.net. Many of the spamers are using a pirated version. Also a dead give away is when you look at the new user you will not that the all list their time location as Entiwok, the first item in that drop down list.

Funny you should mention that. I have a friend from (GMT-12:00) Eniwetok, Kwajalein. (http://www.vbulletin-faq.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10369) :p

The only thing that bugs me with that problem now is you can't do a search from the Admin panel by members timezone. It would make it so much easier to clean out those spam registrations.

I added the "IS BOT" hack that has a time limit of 15 seconds, anything less than that and the registration is rejected. No way any human could register on your forum in less than 15 seconds (with exception to quick register but we don't use it). It also emails your webmaster address to advise how many per night. It's been working GREAT! Also, I added the "NO SPAM!" hack which basically just adds a required registration field where the user has to type a predetermined word, set by the admin. With these two mods installed, we have been catching 98&#37; so far! These bots are a PITA! Great thread guys!

Wrap a harmless looking image with link code. This is even better in a signature image link because you can add alt text.

That last post is fun. I hope some of those email addresses you posted get spammed to death :D

I think the weakness with username or domain lists is that ultimately they are endless. We'll never keep ahead of the war on spam that way.

However, it's not so easy to develop a new behaviour pattern that can sneak past a well-administered board with moderators who know what to look for.

We are getting some of this through PM, could anyone tell me how to set up so people have to post once before they can PM?

I went and checked around out there and it seems as simple as creating a default group that gets promoted after one post.

They've done this to me a few times. Always with a second username. Clever. But not clever enough.

I know this is an old post, but as a newbie whose just had the experience of having a member privately spammed, I need to know how to change the 0 posts to something larger in number for registered users. I've looked under usergroups, users, etc...can someone advise as to how to make it more difficult for new users to spam. I've banned that user, btw. Thanks.

There has always been the old type of spam where people join and make spam posts and thread.

Well, I think a new type of spam was posted on my forum (www.computalk.net (http://www.computalk.net/)) today.

The user had made 0 posts, but their signature was filled with links for viagra etc.

I got suspicious when the homepage of the forum was displaying the users birthday for 5 days in a row. It turned out he was changing his birthday daily so his spammy profile was listed in the high ranking homepage all the time.

Ever had anything like this before?

My site is new enough that to have fun with them I've been changing the link to be for my site. Actually, my moderator gets credit for this. So this Hollywood Video's guy keeps coming back, and making a random post now and then that links back to my home page. Spiderman (http://www.discussny.com/showthread.php?t=2456). It's the Eisenhertz guy. :p

Make an account named Aarronn or something that'll make it to the member list at the start of the alphabet, and set it to make sure you are getting Email notifications via email. Make that fake member post once every couple of weeks to keep it active, and that'll catch many of the spam PMs...

Just be sure that members posts are pretty worthless, as heh, it's a bit awkward to get real PMs... make the member post in your intro board or something...

My RSS bot (Bob RSS) gets PM spam now and again.

Though, this does little against the PM spammers that just hit the active member lists.

I recommend using this addon:

It will check a third-party service to see if a user is a known spammer or not. Maintaining lists of your own is difficult, time consuming and easy to get around. Using a list maintained by hundreds of communities and automatically updated solves a lot of issues.
