Hello,

I currently have a guest forum that i am hoping guests will like the content so much they may join the forum my problem is that there are sometimes downloadable files on the guest forum for them to download, but most of the files are paaword protected by diffrent forums and 9/10 times the password is the name of another forum, now this is exactly ideal, advertising another forum when im trying to get members for my own. What i whant to know is there a VB Hack/Mod that will turn chosen links into astriks or something similar but when copied and pasted will still represent the true values, would be really great if there was such a hack/mod. please let me know

p.s Ideally i wouldn't whant ALL Links within my forum astriked out or hidden if possible, but im open to suggestions :-)

Thanks in advance

None that I know of. Perhaps someone else has seen one.

I don't know about a hack, but I'm thinking you might be able to do something with the replacement variable manager. The trick would be to have the replacement functionality act one way for a member (not change links), and a different way with a guest (put in the asterisks). You could do this with an if else /if conditional structure.

I'm not sure what you're actually looking to replace exactly, but this might be a way to do it.

you do sound as if you are on the rite path here trouble is i don't have a clue what the replacment variable manager is lol, sorry...... maybe if some one could let me know the steps,

please see below for confirmation of what i am looking to do :

oki have a post on my forum that says for example - download free cd ripper

this file is password protected by another forum as the post was just copied by a member from somewhere else ( the pass would be summit like www.someon-elses-site.com)

so in order for them to download the file they lick the link from were it is hosted([url]www.rapidshare.com)

but to open the file they have to type in the pass which is the adress of another forum, i dont want this to be viewable on my forum, just astriksinstaed but reperesent the same values so if they copied and pasted the astriks it would be the same as the pass in order for them to access the file.

the reason i need this is a lot of pepople are joinin the forum and passwording files that link back to other sites, thus meaning me possibily loosing members

Do i make sense lol??

Hmm. That might fall more in the category of masking. But for what it's worth -

Admin CP > Styles and Temlates > Replacement variable manager

I got a rough idea of the power of using replacement variables by reading a thread at vb.org, but I haven't played with it much as yet.

Do a search for replacement variable in the 3.7 section - it should come up.
