Joeychgo 01-27-2008, 02:37 PM eBay is going to lower it's fees in 2008. Since affiliates get a % of those fees (and if you use auctionads/shoppingads, your part of an eBay affiliate) you can expect to make less.
EBay plans to cut the fees it charges sellers across auctions in its three biggest markets -- the United States, Germany and Britain, executives told investors. Next week, eBay will announce changes in the pricing of its services and improvements in the way buyers can rate sellers, Donahoe said.

Peggy 01-27-2008, 02:46 PM Gonna be alot of unhappy campers out there.
A bit of it may depend on how eBay does the "lower fees".
My board is mostly made up of long time eBay buyers and small and hobby eBay sellers (past and present, myself included) that sell used, collectibles, vintage, antiques more then brand new. Although they're hopeful there's a lot of concern that the lower FVF (final value fees) may be based on tiers so that the ones that benefit will be the high volume sellers that flood the market with lots of "stuff".
If that happens, depending on how it's set up, the drop in income from ShoppingAds could potentially not drop at all or only slightly depending on what keywords (or specific sellers or even prices) a publisher uses.

Hi Peggy.:)
Joeychgo 01-28-2008, 09:02 AM I dont see how. Affiliates get a % of the total ebay fees applied to an auction
Peggy 01-28-2008, 12:21 PM Hi Peggy.:)Hiya!
WoodiE55 01-29-2008, 06:52 AM Unless that cut the costs by more then half then I'll still be very happy with Shopping/AuctionAds.

Okay... here's the new fee structure..
http://pages.ebay.com/sell/update08/basic/index.html
Lower insertion fees by a bit..
Free Gallery
3.5% (I think) HIGHER FVFs for many sellers
I have a copy of the old fee structure as well.
This has just hit.. so I haven't had time to do the math yet. I have a feeling my board members are not going to be happy about this though. :(
Joeychgo 01-29-2008, 11:57 AM Lower insertion, but higher final value fees - so maybe it'll be a wash for us (or maybe an improvement)
For example. I did a quick look at some numbers.
For a auction that starts at $0.01 and sells at $25 and has a gallery feature
Old Fee Structure Total Fees: $1.86
New Fee Structure Total Fees: $2.34
So it looks at first glance that total fees are going up, not down.
Lets do another for an item that sells for $100
Old Fee Structure Total Fees: $4.30
New Fee Structure Total Fees: $4.96
So looking at it at first glance, it appears that sold items will have a higher fee and unsold items will have a lower fee then currently. To us, thats good because we dont get paid on unsold items, only sold items, so our revenue should go up.

it's even doubley good for us.
I'm sure there are people out there not liking the fees involved with not selling things so they hold off on some of the things they could be offering. With lower fees for things not being sold, they may be more inclined to put more on the market.
Win/Win?
Joeychgo 01-29-2008, 12:56 PM Maybe - Time will tell...
Yes, that's right and it's much the same as the sellers on my board have come up with when doing the math.
ssandgirls 01-29-2008, 03:54 PM Wow, thats sure a big increase in Final Value Fees........
Joeychgo 01-29-2008, 04:26 PM It equals $0.66 on a $100 item and $0.48 on a $25 item.. Not really all that big.

From what I see there are pluses and minuses to this lowering of the listing fees.
Along with individual long time sellers on my board there is a group that's been around almost as long as eBay. There whole thing is to have special promotions where they list a bunch of items at a starting price of 99 cents (like the "old days" on ebay). This part will be great for them. :)
OTOH it will also mean that that a search engine that's already overloaded and quirky will be even more so AND it could potentially make it more difficult for buyers to shift through lots of stuff they don't want to find the items they do and not feel overwhelmed with the process (which makes many buyers leave ebay.. not a good thing for those that run ShoppingAds).
It equals $0.66 on a $100 item and $0.48 on a $25 item.. Not really all that big.
It may not look that big on the surface when you look at it as one item. When you're talking about low profit margins (done in order to be competitive in todays eBay market) and multiplied over 100 or 200 auctions it can hit your wallet pretty hard. Basically it's not as bad as some had been worried about but not as good as some had hoped for. :)

For me personally this whole thing is a mixed bag. As a someone who has sold (as an artist and antique/collectible hobby seller), bought, taught and even fought eBay for around 10 yrs I don't care for the new tiered fee structure (not to mention some of the other new stuff). :(
As someone running SA it will be either a wash or slightly in my favor. :) My sellers (and all members) have been told what the deal is with SA (as well as the eBay to SA url hack) and they're okay with it since they see it as money not in eBay's pockets and helping a board that means a lot to them... as long as they're okay with it, it works for me. :D
BTW FWIW - Thank you for setting this board and forum up. As someone still rather new to running a vB board and now SA it's been very helpful to me. :)
Cyclops 04-07-2008, 05:50 AM eBay has dropped Commission Junction.
eBay has unveiled the eBay Partner Network, a new global affiliate program for publishers driving traffic to eBay. Officially launching on April 1st, 2008, the eBay Partner Network will be eBay’s new in-house affiliate network, designed to more fully align the programs across eBay’s global properties and give affiliates expanded access to revenue opportunities across its platforms.
Since 2001 eBay has enabled affiliates and Web site publishers to be paid for all traffic driven to eBay. With one of the most competitive payouts in the industry and one of the broadest and deepest product selections available to affiliates, the eBay Partner Network will continue to help eBay extend the reach of its platforms to the edges of the Web. The new in-house program will allow eBay to more closely align the program with the needs of its publishers and the eBay Community, and will eventually engage all of eBay’s assets to create one of the most robust affiliate networks in existence.
Just an "FYI" I had written shoppingads.com in mid March about the change over and was told, "We are in fact aware of the eBay affiliate changes, and no, they will not in any way affect ShoppingAds."
Just a heads up though.. if you sign up as an eBay Partner, the site seems to be slower then normal and a bit buggy still (the first few days were a nightmare) and they don't have all the widgets they had up and running yet.
FWIW I'm now using both the shoppingads widget and have signed up as an eBay affiliate (now "Partner") and use their widgets as well.
Because of the way it works I like the shoppingads widget to help promote Club99 (a great older eBay selling group who uses my board as it's home base) since they have bi-monthly promotions where they all start and end pretty much at the same time and use a keyword in their title. For the rest of the eBay sellers on my board (who don't want to sacrifice the "gold" title space) the eBay widgets are perfect since I have a keyword that my board's eBay sellers can add to their auction description so they're picked up those widgets. :) (I've known many of these sellers for a decade or so and IME they're the best for customer service, etc so I do what I can to help them.):)
I've also been using the shoppingads change ebay links to affiliate links mod from vB.org but am considering changing to the eBay mod instead since my members may feel more comfortable if they see eBay versus shoppingads when they hover over a link.
