I'm tinkering with a first post ad placement for guests only.
Do you think this layout, a mix of my inventory of sold/affiliate banner ads and the Google link unit, compliant with Google's ad placement policy?

The main issue is whether the banner ad will be confused as part of the Google Adsense program, I think.

I wouldn't think that the banner would be confused with the google ads. I could tell right off without reading your post that it wasn't. And I'm easily confused. Just ask Joey!
However, to be sure, you may want to put a space below the banner and above the links.
As for compliance, I can't answer that one.

Thanks Peggy. I'm going to add an extra line between the banner and the ruler line, just to make sure.
On the compliance side, the only issue I'm concerned about is making sure the banner isn't confused as part of the Adsense program. I'm pretty sure there's no problem in terms of other aspects.

How do you add lines anyways and how did you make it show up for guests only or something?

In the ad_showthread_firstpost template, add this code:
<if condition="$bbuserinfo[usergroupid]=='1'">
<div align="center">
<div class="page" style="width:100%; text-align:left">
<div style="padding:0px 25px 0px 25px" align="left">
<br />
<div align="center">
*put banner ad code here
</div>
<br />
<hr />
<div align="center">
*put Google link ad code here
</div>
<br />
</div>
</div>
</div>
</if>

It's the <hr /> tag that produces the line, if that is all you're after.

pretty much, so i just add it after each link or ... something?

...If you want a line after each link, although I'd recommend it is used as a visual cue to category separation rather than item separation.
Ultimately, it depends on the look you are trying to achieve. It's a styling tool - nothing more, nothing less.

Mmm im using it now, its pretty good, didnt know about the <hr />, been using the br alot, atleast it looks a bit more organized that each of my small banners has a small little box to its own.

I would say that layout is fine in terms of google TOS as well :)

Why not show leader board ads instead ? These ads have more probability to be clicked.
