Where do you promote?

ResaleBroker

Just out of curiosity, where are some of the places that members here are promoting their forums?

Joeychgo

Link directories, backlinks from other sites, coop, sig links on probably 30 sites, car domain (for my car sites)

No paid advertising though

Any thought to creating a growing list of site/directories to submit to?

Right now I get most of my traffic from the home page http://www.national-real-estate-directory.com
which is pretty well established in the search engines thru sitetutor.com which is #1 for terms like "Real Estate Webmaster", "Real Estate Search Engine Optimization" etc. in Google.

Right now the visitors are coming but not posting enough, gotta do some work :)

I use a mix of free / paid advertising. Probably the biggest paid ad I have running right now is with WoW directory.

You find cheap advertising on other forums. $10 bucks a month. I love it. hehe

Most of the growth on my sites seems to come from word of mouth. They both started small and have really started to take off lately!

Come one then... we are curious now... what are these sites then...:)

The largest is Terranuts (http://www.terranuts.com). It's a graphics arts site that my husband and I own. The other (though far smaller) is Ninjamicros (http://www.ninjamicros.com). It's a computer hardware site owned by a friend of ours; we help run it for him.

I haven't really done any advertising for my site. I have links in maybe 2 or 3 other forums. 98% of my members arrived by word of mouth.

As long as I have members post, I'm happy!

Yahoo, Yahoo and, oh yeah, yahoo.

Yahoo loves my M/C site. MSN seems to like my Computer site as it's listed by Microsoft. :D

Yahoo and MSN are very good to me and it's free!

Your forum rules!!! Good people make a good forum. I have learned that when the right people came to help me with my real estate forum ... things started rocking.

I'll see you here and there :)

I promote through the Co-op at Digitalpoint.com and word of mouth. I have my sites submitted to lots of different directories. Just this morning I was accepted as a DMOZ.org Editor and I now have my sites in the DMOZ directory. Lots faster than waiting for them to be added on there own. How much do you think this will help me.

What section are you editing? Can you help a motorcycle site or a computer site?

Thanks and congrats!

Sorry,
no I am in charge of Nissan Car Clubs. I have quite a bit of work to do in that section from what I can see. Hopefully I will get that section caught up and maybe take on one more section or two. Why dont you try to become an editor I am sure they need them.

The biker directory seems to be locked up by professional promoters, but I may try again.

If I can get in with no effort, fine. If not, I'm not impressed anyway. But I may be wrong.

The reason for becoming a DMOZ editor should never be to get your own sites or friends' sites listed faster and listed period. That is where DMOZ is having problems right now. The self serving atitude of too many editors.

Well I agree, but it certainly helps to have a dialog with the editor. If my site is worth it they can list it when I apply. I wasn't asking for an insider to get me in quicker. But having access to an editor may help if that editor has the time.

Yeah. That's very noble of you. You should fit right in.

And you spelled "their" incorrectly.

Forgive me for making a mistake on the internet. I work 12 hour shifts at night then work on my sites and things during the day. I am usually pretty much exhausted when I get to do anything fun online. So if I do make a mistake I would appreciate if you could follow me around and let me know so I can fix it when I get back around to it. By the way if you would like to follow my section and keep an eye out to see if I'm doing my job correctly I would appreciate that as well. With people like you here helping out I'm sure lots of others will return.

I find it interesting that you would take time out from your busy schedule to comment on what was a trivial afterthought (my comment about your spelling) and ignore the main point, which was about your blatant admission that you became a DMOZ editor in order to list your own sites.

ClubTitan.org

No I became an editor because when I tried to submit my sites there was no one editing that section. I got to reading and found that they needed help. I joined because "there" was need for people to help. I thought that was what I was doing. If you knew me or visited my sites you would find that I am a Nissan Enthusiast that loves the community. That is why I thought I would help others in this same community to get "their" sites listed in DMOZ as well. It's apparent that you have no knowledge of me and are just spouting off about someone you don't even know. You should seriously get to know someone before you voice your opinion. Its people like you that give good places like this a bad name. Joey feel free to remove me from this board. I doubt I will come back if this is the kind of moderators I can expect here. I appreciate you inviting me to this community but I can see I am not welcome.

You're right -- I don't know you. However, I was simply responding to your own words -- it was you who posted this:

Lets not get out of control here guys. Minstrial, I know Titan a bit and hes a good guy, dont lump him in with that group of idiot dmoz editors that only are out to further themselves.

Titan - I know Minstrial and he is a good guy also. Realize many people have harsh feelings about DMOZ as a whole because they can be very arrogant, dismissive and insulting when you ask simple things. Your statement about how being an editor got your sites in DMOZ is what actually happens in many cases. Some people become editors, list their sites and their friends sites, and either ignore the catagory after that, or refuse to list competitor sites, or even worse things. Unfortunately there isnt a good way to complain about this stuff so people get hot headed.

Can we all be friends again?

minstrel

Fine with me. As I said, I don't know him personally and therefore have nothing against him personally. I was merely reacting to what he posted.

Hey Titan,

Joey makes several good points here for both sides of the argument, and please belive me - honestly, you are most certainly very welcome here.

Hopefully this can be a win-win situation and you can each have your say. Remember, no-one wants to, nor is trying, to fall-out anywhere. Just good 'ol practical debate - which is always difficult online.

C'mon, we all want to see you on here...:)

it is exactly that what is needed ... a neutral community having the webmaster members at interest. Too many forums are biased and leaning towards protecting certain interest groups. Digitalpoint is not, this forum isn't either ... let's keep it this way :)

When I start a forum, I will announce it on the News/Usergroups. I pick relevant areas and make an "invitation". This will generally get people to your site. As well, I have found that Google will also get you listed fairly fast as well.

I also will join web rings that are relevant to the subject matter of the forum.

One of my sites was also mentioned in a newspaper article which attracted interest in the site.
