Anyone converted from PHPBB to vBulletin?Joeychgo 03-10-2005, 12:56 AM Has anyone converted from a PHPBB forum to a vBulletin forum? theMusicMan 03-10-2005, 03:19 AM That'd be me Joey...:) Did it about 10 months ago with no issues... What are you thinking of doing? Joeychgo 03-10-2005, 04:49 AM There is a site I am thinking about buying. It is PHPBB- about 40k posts & 2100 members. Im concerned about being able to transfer posts and member info most of all - theMusicMan 03-10-2005, 04:52 AM Why not do a trial Joey...? vB has the ImpEx module available which will import from phpBB. When I did it I didn't lose anything. What are you concerned about losing? Joeychgo 03-10-2005, 05:08 AM What I would like to do - is set up VB seperate from the PHPBB so I can add hacks and style it - then import all the posts and member info from the phpbb - theMusicMan 03-10-2005, 05:17 AM Hmmm... probably best to import first as if you found that after you spent considerable time hacking vB then the ImpEx didn't work as you wanted it to - you'd have wasted your time. Joeychgo 03-10-2005, 06:00 AM I could do a test import couldnt I? Why wouldnt the import work? I believe its the latest version of phpbb. noppid 03-10-2005, 12:03 PM Impex works really well, however, I would do the import first as John suggests. That just seems like a safety net. But I'm paranoid anyway. I would venture a guess that the phpBB importer is the most developed of them and works the best as well. Joeychgo 03-10-2005, 12:44 PM am I likely to lose any data? noppid 03-10-2005, 02:36 PM am I likely to lose any data? http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showpost.php?p=657606&postcount=2 That's the dope on impex and phpbb from jelsoft. The manual http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/impex theMusicMan 03-10-2005, 02:38 PM am I likely to lose any data? None Joey.... I didn't!! Joeychgo 03-10-2005, 03:02 PM Great - Thats all I want is to maintain the user database and the posts. theMusicMan 03-11-2005, 12:27 AM If you did a test ImpEx and could see that the data all came across withouth issue; you could then do your vB customisation but make sure none of the hacks/mods alter the structure of the SQL behind the Users and Posts tables. Once you had it looking good... simply re-import! Joeychgo 03-11-2005, 01:07 AM Great -thanks John! clasione 03-12-2005, 08:10 AM I'm probably going to try one too soon.... never did one yet..... Joeychgo 03-12-2005, 08:35 AM I havent either - Ive always owned a VB clasione 03-12-2005, 08:44 AM VB is the best.... Nothing else can even compete in my book.... I look at my php boards, and they just look so cheezy to me.... I want to convert tham just so I don't have to look at them anymore.... :p Joeychgo 03-12-2005, 09:12 AM PHPBB is great if you are a kid ooking to hang with friends. If you want a professional board- you gotta go VB clasione 03-12-2005, 09:52 AM well said and accurate Sal Collaziano 03-26-2005, 12:43 PM The next best choice in message boards would be Invision Board.. Infopop is coming back on board with a new php script as well. They used to be #1 before vBulletin... SiteTutor 03-26-2005, 02:54 PM I have heard a lot of good about invision board but not as much as about vBulletin Joeychgo 03-26-2005, 08:35 PM THe answer is simple. Go to Big-Boards.com How many of the biggest Boards are vb? How many are IPB? | |
