Hey, came from DP forums. I'm in the process of starting a forum. Trying to decide between VBulletin and PHPbb. Any insite would be nice. BTW. cool forum.

p.s. also wondering if I do go with VB, I don't know alot about mysql and php, should I pay to have them install it on my host?

Hi kyle422

With any reputable web host you will find that MySQL and PHP are already installed on the server your site will be installed on. All you need to do with either vB or phpBB would be to install that application into yoru webspace and ensure in the relevant config files that they connect to the MySQL server.

As for phpBB or vB - I used phpBB for two years then migrated to vB and haven't looked back since.

you will find VB to be very easy to use and quite customizable.

It definetely seems that VB users swear by it. Same goes for some of the people I have spoke to about PHPbb. I think they might like that it is free over the $160. What makes it worth the money? (without being to detailed, because I'm sure this question could be the basis for a very big novel :)

To be honest with you, there is no real comparison. Yeah, phpBB does a brilliant job... for a free forum app... vB is a commercialy available product and as such is supported to boot.

There are a plethora of additional standard functions in vB that you have to add into phpBB.

I don't want to knock phpBB as it served me well for 18 months... but vB knocks the spots of it... go on... you know you want to...:)

Another point - it isnt $160 ---- you can lease it for $85 per year as well. That is the approach I suggest for a new board, in case the board doesnt work out. Make your purchase year 2.

THere is a banner link on the home page for VB - Try it- You'll love it.

Lease it for 85 and if you love it, you can go owned for another 85 within 30 days. It's a decent deal.
