Skype Technologies today announced that it has acquired Sonorit and its US subsidiary Camino Networks, for about 700,000 shares of eBay stock, a deal that represents a $27 million outlay.
Skype, which eBay bought for $2.5 billion in 2005, provides VoIP (voice over internet protocol) services in 27 languages and will integrate the online voice engineering company in to its own team.
Nikklas Zennstrom the co-founder and CEO of Skype said of the acquisition: 'They will add considerable expertise to our own world-class technology team.'
According to a Skype press release, the Sonorit and Camino start-up is responsible for: 'Building unique solutions for high quality speech processing, coding, and transmission for the next generation of internet-based networks.'
A recent Continetal Research poll indicated that Skype was the leading UK VoIP provider, with 48 per cent of those surveyed revealing they used the software.
