Hall of Shame

When I took a look at my site this morning there was a new member spamming the sales and marketing forum.

In an effort to deter this type of spam I added a "Hall of Shame" to my forum with the description, "Companies to AVOID who have SPAMMED this forum.

What do you think? Good, Bad, Smart, Stupid?

In the words of the Late Great Dale Earnhardt. "It doesn't matter what they are saying about you, as long as they are talking about you."

That is a free advertisment to them as a bot sees it. ;)

I decided the "Pros" didn't outweigh the "Cons". Thanks.

To make it less likely to catch unwanted visitors to the scammers site, remember to remove the links. People don't usually arse themselves to visit the site, if it isn't a click away from them. Also censoring the URLs is an option. :)

Agree, just delete the BS ASAP!!!!!!!

I would screen new members and check their URL's and the WHOIS also to see if they own the damned sites they have in their SIG......

I like the idea, but it could be an invitation to a lawsuit.

You have the right to ban anyone and delete any post at will - with or without cause.

It is YOUR site. Do what YOU feel is best for the site.

A lawsuit... you gott be kiddin me eh. Joey is 100% right there. In a court of law, the judge IS the law... on my site... I am the law and allow or dissallow who I like - without explanation. Period.

Too many forums just let anyone join, now we had an issue on Digital Point that Shawn got really ****ed off about last night and he deleted the thread because the guy was showing members how link cloaking could happen within a forum post.

This guy was posting smilies with links to porno sites (he was just showing how it could be done with HTML within posts), he must have been on to something because Shawn was really ****ed off about it.

Yep, I posted the vB code to show the folks panicing how it worked so they could deal with it and the thread disappeared.

Go Figure!

Yes but Shawn was mad because he did not want folks to see how this could be done to other forums from Digital Point.

He was not happy about it, let's put it that way.

If you show this to Joey he may or may not want to put it up here in a thread

I like Halls of Shame, it shows other webmasters what and who to look out for. As long as the live links are being deleted, I think it's cool.
You may also consider making it a members only accessibility because when the content is too unrelated, it may hurt your forum rankings in some instances.

I can understand Shawn's point. Its a fine line between educating people what others could do , and educating people who might do it themselves.

Good example but it does not apply to these small forums, the TOS claims that any member can be banned and each member is responsible for his own content, not the forum owners.

Plus we are talking about judgment calls by owners to ban certain members for posting violations, not censoring free speech in the public or lawsuits to stop free speech.
