I've tired plowing through vB.org looking for ways to cut corners to give my forums a bit more of a speed boost. Most uneeded stuff has been disabled (at least the things I could find or think of). The DB server is not local to the webserver so there is a bit of inherent latency, but yet page generation averages between 200 -300 ms with under a dozen queries each... I know it can be a lot faster.

Aside from the internal disabling of unused thigs I've added the template compressor.... got some good tip/tricks on giving her a good swift kick to get her moving?

Figure we the colelctive minds present we could gather a good list in one place for them.

have you gone into your acp to maintenance and optimized your db/tables/etc?

truthfully, I do not think it's your vB. I have a fairly heavily modded forum and I have no problem with speed. I really think it's your host/server

Thanks... employed a couple that I'd missed in the past. We'll see if they make any significant differences, if not, then I think a dedicated box is going to have to happen sooner than later.

I'm cringing at the thought (cost), but it'll have to happen for me as well, eventually

If your talking about captive reefing, you have no need for a dedicated box. That site should be fine on a shared server.

That's the vB site I'm working on at the moment... up to half a second to display a thread seems awfully slow to me. But living on a shared box makes it hard to tell if it's my site dragging or if it's others that are causing slowdowns.

I was on shared for a long time. I owned 2-3 forums already, one with over 2000 members before I moved off shared onto a VPS.

If you cant get good performance on that forum, just try changing hosts. The problem may very well be your host has old or underpowered servers. See this article: Choosing a Web host for your vBulletin Forum (http://www.vbulletin-faq.com/web-hosting.htm) - there are a few good hosts listed there.

I agree I think it's a server issue. If you haven't got REALLY busy forums, the problem ain't vB. I recently converted my phpBB board to vB and there's a notable performance boost!
