I run a site called the The Vikes Rike (http://s116946478.onlinehome.us/vb/cmps_index.php) , which is a fan community for the Minnesota Vikings. Unfortunately, the site hasn't taken off like I hoped it would. I recently discovered vBCloaker over at vBulletin.org, and I read all the posts and decided to install. Is it really that big of a threat for a small website to run a cloaking software? I'm just unknowledgeable as to how Google finds out if you are running a cloaker.

The term "cloaking" is used to describe a website that returns altered webpages to search engines crawling the site. In other words, the webserver is programmed to return different content to Google than it returns to regular users, usually in an attempt to distort search engine rankings. This can mislead users about what they'll find when they click on a search result. To preserve the accuracy and quality of our search results, Google may permanently ban from our index any sites or site authors that engage in cloaking to distort their search rankings.
That comes from Google's website. Need I say more?
Basically, it means this. If you make a page that is different for google spiders then it is for regular visitors, then your cloaking.
And believe me, Google has unidentified spiders all over.
Why does Google not like this? Do you remember the days when you would do a search for Widgets, click on a listing, and end up on a porn site? Yhat happened because of cloaking. The google page was about widgets, the visitor page was porn. Thats why Google takes a harsh stance on this.
Lets assume you ahve any doubt about what im saying. Is it worth the risk of beeing banned from Google to try?

Yea, you're right. The only reason I installed was because I was disappointed at the lack of activity on my site, especially with all the work I put in. Hopefully after reading up on alot of SEO tips, I'll be on my way.

The "build it they will come" is a myth.
