Dedicated Hosting

Ok All,

Here is a shot you.

We just moved sites to a new host and they are just terrible. We call to get support and they say they do not support dedicated servers, yet we purchased it from them. Now, maybe... just maybe... the person who ordered the server did not check the fine print for managed dedicated servers.

Now, we have decided, that with the current situation, we need to switch hosts. Here is what I am seeing and this is where I need help.

We are currently paying approx $90/month for 1000GB bandwidth / 512MB ram / 80GB HD / Plesk 7.5... Plus all the other stuff... php, mysql, etc. etc...

I did a little google for dedicated servers and FLOP.. (like I expected) tons and tons.

So, basically looking for feedback and direction from people that have been there before. Anything? Anyone?

Thanks

Not at that rate. Remember, you get what you pay for. Just how much support do you expect for $90 a month? Honestly?

It is not the support I want...

The server we are on is basically running well and then it bogs down... So, we call and say what's up.. "Sorry sir we do not support dedicated servers".

Here's an other example. Runs great all day. No one has touched anything or uploaded files all day... All of a sudden, we get a vB DB error, email sent to support.. bla bla bla... So we check the DB is there.. and nothing has changed. We check the server.. running fine. 5 minutes later, it starts working again.

Anyways, I am not throwing stones or expecting the world for $100 a month, but we run a server that will peak at about 900GB bandwidth a month in the busy season and we need a host that can handle it and a server that is reliable.

Cheers

Let me add one other thing.

I am looking for good host and reliable server... the price may be flexible.

Cheers

Try using http://www.servermatrix.com

ServerMatrix certainly isn't the way to go, if you need assistance with running the server (ie. managed dedicated server), as they don't provide any help beyond what's really necessary. You either hook up with a service provider that provides a turnkey solution with all the maintenance and upkeep (sold as managed server), or then go with a regular managed server, but get server administration services from a third party (ThunderIT (http://www.thunderit.com/) is a small one man firm I can recommend for that). The most common way is to use managed hosting for this type of stuff, but the more peculiar server + admin option might get cheaper and you can choose what tech to use. And don't get fooled by something being "managed", as it can also mean "our staff is fully off-site and never move their lardasses to switch that broken SCSI RAID."

Dedicated solutions:

EV1Servers (http://www.ev1servers.net/) - One of the largest in the mass market. Not good for support dependable customers, unless you have a tech to rely on.

Managed solutions:

Rackspace (http://www.rackspace.com/solutions/managed_linux.php) - State of the art in managed business.

There's of course many others out there, but pointing out two. Will work out more for you later.
