I imagine many of those will have been spiders..

I've had upto 200+ Yahoo! Slurp spiders crawling my forum at any one time.

As you SEO your forum and start getting rankings, then you'll have visitors, and be asking - Why dont they register?

I hv a few suggestions which might help:

1. Making forums Search Engine Friendly.
2. Submitted site to the directories specially which lists forums database.
3. Trying participating in other webmaster forums.
4. Running contests.
5. Rewarding members.
6. Links from other forums.

These things take time in the begenning but soon your forum will start receiving new memebers and post.
