How do you choose your team? What is the criteria you have for those who want to become a Moderator and do you have guidelines for your staff clearly laid out to prevent any possible conflicts/problems with members or other board staff.

For this site, I contacted a few people I know from other boards who are knowlegable people.

I think if you review your members you should be able to find some members who make good posts, reviews, comments and are active on your forums. These are the members who are suitable to be promoted as a moderators.

I think it's a "Site Specific" kind of thing. I try and pick members that suit the forum they moderate. I get to know (as much as possible) what kind of person they are before making my judgement. I've made a couple bad choices in the past. You live, you learn.

Very true matey... very true.
I have been very fortunate on my forums... all my mods are total stars and I am very grateful to them all for the work they put in. I guess there's a certain amount of luck involved too...
Will be looking for a new mod soon too;)
We pick them for mature and civil posts, the abilty to follow rules (you can't have them enforcing rules if they don't follow them) and the activity on the board. Additional concerns are the time they are active so a "plus" is posting from outside North and South America.. It is important to us to be responsive to problems as quickly as possible. And it is important to mirror the religions of the staff to those of the members. We try to mix the staff to avoid the bickering of a Christian being moderated by an Atheist for example.
There is generally no knowledge requirements - religion is generally an opinion and the staff does not supply "answers". All of the moderators work all the main forums with assignments to read all the posts in a few. So, the knowledge required is of our rules. After appointment, they learn enforcement policy and procedures.
Promotion to SuperModerator is by proven performance at the moderator level as will be the criteria for the Admin positions we will create.

Observe your members for an extended time period - who feels like you could get along well with? Who shows the interests of the community over their own? Are they knowledgable in the areas they discuss?
Don't make quick decisions - someone can be a saint today, and a veritable demon tomorrow. I usually won't make someone board staff who hasn't posted regularly for about 6 months.

Recruiting them from different forums who I think have potential.

I picked those who had been around and were 'mature'. I couldn't use moderating knowledge, since they were mostly teenagers (video game message boards). Some have been at the boards for eight years!!

Music Man is right, it takes luck and good sense, we are lucky we got Music Man to moderate here, that is a sure thing! :)
Joey had way too many mod's to start with such a small forum, but everything is fine now, I think too many mod's can ruin a forum right from the start, the wrong one's are death to a forum also!
We have two great moderators here and that is all we need at this time!
