Joeychgo 04-14-2006, 06:28 AM Ok, my latest brainstorm...
vBulletin FAQ Product and Services Reviews Directory (http://www.vbulletin-faq.com/reviews/)
The idea I had is as follows:
This review directory is a place for those selling services for vBulletin forums to be listed on one place; They can also send prospective customers to our directory to view the opinions posted by their previous customers.
This review directory is a place where forum owners can post their opinions of various products and services, and to research opinions of others before they purchase these products and services;
Our site can benefit because we are offering a service to vBulletin owners. This is also promotional because people have to register to post reviews (but not to view the reviews - no registration is required for that.)Please take a look at what I have so far as far as design and usability and offer comments. I can add pretty much anything we need to.
Peggy 04-14-2006, 07:13 AM Ok...
So if I'm reading this right (sorry no sleep again last night), hosts can 'advertise' in this section, as well as skin creators, hack authors, etc? And people shopping for said services can come here and review them, post comments if they wish, or questions?
As for the set-up, I like this. Having these products in one section is a good move. The way you have it set up to show a brief description before they even click is quite user-friendly.
This could bring alot of business to not only us, but to the ones who advertise here. And by advertising here, they'll essentially be bringing us (FAQ) alot of attention and exposure.
Yep, I'm liking it.
Joeychgo 04-14-2006, 02:48 PM Part of my thinking is that we should contact skin designers and paid hack owners, let them know about the directory, and invite them to send clients here to post their recommendations. This will help get out the word of vBFAQ as well.
Ive moved this thread to the public area so we can get osme of our current members thoughts.
Peggy 04-14-2006, 03:05 PM I like the way you think
Coder1 04-14-2006, 04:23 PM How would you differentiate between this and what www.vbulletin.org does? .org has a "quasi-official" status which gives them a huge advantage over this site and smiliar, such as vbhackers.

Those sites are for Free Hacks to be released.
This directory is for PAID hacks, such as vBSEO, and for vBulletin Skin Designers. Paid releases are not allowed on either site.
The idea is that it is free method for the creators to advertise, and a way for their customers to post their review of the products and or companies. These reviews can be used by future customers to determin if the paid hack or skin designer is honest, if the product is worthwhile, etc. I have seen a few instances where skin designers have ripped off people, and that could have been avoided had there been a place to go look at past experiences of other customers.
The other key, is that this is objective. This isnt a 'testimonials' page on a sales website, where only the most favorable opinions get posted.
smacklan 04-14-2006, 09:14 PM I think it is a good idea that isn't being persued with vigor in the vB community (there are a few that have started that I am involved in, but haven't gotten off the ground). My first suggestion is to remove the biggest ripper in the vb skin world from your links directory...you probably know who I am refering to ;)

I agree.

Everytime the org asserts something to help get the paid programmers to post, it is half baked and never happens. Several members usually try to one up them and fail as well.
Peggy 04-15-2006, 10:09 AM sounding better all the time

Lists are nice. They certainly help those that need a place to post a paid hack.
But, if a hack is good, no advertising may be necessary at all. :)
But not all hacks are good. So a place where known experienced coders hang out and you can get questions answered objectively about hacks should be a big benefit.
I don't agree with the .org being that place, there are too many that have blind loyalty and can't see through it to be objective. We don't need to be that way. Out opinion is that if I'm good, you can't hurt me. If your code is good, you help yourself. So I have no need to not be objective. I know I give what I advertise and see no other code as a threat. In fact, competition is actually good!
Joeychgo 04-15-2006, 11:10 AM Noppid just offered a few suggestions which I implemented. Take a look:
vB FAQ Services Reviews Directory (http://www.vbulletin-faq.com/reviews/)
I am still looking for more input on how to improve/enhance this. That includes a better name for it as well.
Peggy 04-15-2006, 11:46 AM vB-FAQ Product and Services Directory
Or simply vB-FAQ Services Directory
you don't need a whole long drawn out name, and you don't need the work Reviews in the title, since the descriptions already makes it clear that they can write reviews
I like to use the K.I.S.S. method...
Keep It Short Stupid
Keep It Simple Stupid
and NO I'm not calling you stupid... let me get that out before I get a pm from someone who thinks I did lol
Joeychgo 04-15-2006, 11:55 AM LOL - Ok, I wont think you called me stupid :)
The name needs to be descriptive so if you jsut see a link to it somewhere, you have an idea what it is.
The word "Reviews" describes that there is more to it then just a list of services -
My dilemma, is describing it in a short, concise manner - or KISS manner.
Peggy 04-15-2006, 12:10 PM ok, but I still don't think the Reviews has to be in the title. Once they click on the link they'll see it. but that's jmho
Joeychgo 04-15-2006, 12:11 PM Exactly my point - you have to interest them enought to get them to click the link... :)
Peggy 04-15-2006, 12:13 PM well then why'd you ask for a better name?!?! You have the one you want, lol.
still thinking on the description but it looks fine to me
Joeychgo 04-15-2006, 01:05 PM well then why'd you ask for a better name?!?! You have the one you want, lol.
No I dont. Im just pointing out what we need to convey with the anchor text
Peggy 04-15-2006, 01:27 PM teasing with you sweets... I'm really no good at stuff like this. Y'all are much more knowledgeable about anchor texts and stuff than I am
Joeychgo 04-15-2006, 02:14 PM Yes - but you also have fresh eyes :)
Peggy 04-15-2006, 09:27 PM I'll give you fresh..........
Peggy 04-17-2006, 08:34 AM How long will it be, before this is open for use?
Joeychgo 04-17-2006, 12:54 PM Very Soon.

EDIT:
I was wondering do you think this could be extended to include a BBS rating system? I've seem some boards that have WOW'ed me. Others are run of the mill. The only rule s/would be you cannot submit you're own board.
