I am going to be transferring to a new host and switching to vb from phpbb.
Should I transfer first then switch, or switch to vb then transfer?

Transfering to new host and switching to vb from phpbbJoeychgo 04-26-2005, 07:00 PM I am going to be transferring to a new host and switching to vb from phpbb. Should I transfer first then switch, or switch to vb then transfer? tygersclaw 04-27-2005, 12:53 AM Do the upgrade on the old server then move it. Transfering a database and then converting increases the chance of db corruption. As well...what if the database you are on is say 4.0.18 and your new server is 4.0.24? There is a difference. theMusicMan 04-27-2005, 02:43 AM Personally Joey, I'd do the following in this order: Ensure your new Webhosting account is set up and running correctly Install your new instance of vB on this new howsting account Backup old webhost phpBB files and dB (preferably using shell - PuTTy) Transer the phpBB database and code to the new hosting account (if ASO, use fantastico to create the phpBB instance and ask Tim/Support to do the transfer of the phpBB files and dB - he had mine up and runnign in minutes!!!) Download and run the vB ImpEx module This way you ensure that (a) your new vB runs well on your new host, (b) you have a full working backup of your old phpBB forum, (c) you run the vB Import on the server your new vB fourm is going to be hosted on and (d) yuo don't have to install vB twice!! SEbasic 08-31-2005, 04:11 AM I know this thread is kinda old, but it somes up when you do a search for "phpbb import"... Just as an FYI for anyone who wants to use 3.5 and the impex script, you will first need to install 3.0.8 and use the import script on that, as vB 3.5 doesn't yet work with impex (Trust me, it's taken a while to find that out) ;) Joeychgo 08-31-2005, 11:36 AM Yes - although im sure there will be an impex script for vbulletin 3.5 soon. noppid 08-31-2005, 12:54 PM vB staff has posted, at least I saw it, Impex for 3.5 will be available at the gold release. I hate it when I hear folks wasted time. To bad we couldn't give ya a heads up sooner. :( SEbasic 09-01-2005, 01:12 AM Ah it's not your bad - I need to learn as much about vB as I can :) It's an awesome system huh - A million times better than phpBB (IMO). I did see staff write about impex not working on 3.5, but it did need a lot of digging to find it. Anyway - at least I'm pretty profficient at getting it installed now ;) noppid 09-01-2005, 01:39 AM You won't regret the transfer. SEbasic 09-01-2005, 02:03 AM I hope not... It's all pretty impressive I've got to say... I had to take 3.5 down, but I'm *hoping* that I'll get it back up this afternoon... The import was a bit messy, so just dealing with that at the moment. noppid 09-01-2005, 06:24 AM Install and import to 3.0.8. Then upgrade to 3.5. :) SEbasic 09-01-2005, 06:29 AM Yeah, I'm sitting on 3.0.8 right now... I think I'll do the upgrade today - it seems silly using something that will be out of date soon, especially as all the plugins will have to be changed... I just *hope* that the upgrade goes OK... noppid 09-01-2005, 06:34 AM Cross your fingers. hehe Make a copy of the working DB and leave the 3.0.8 files in place so ya can fall back quickly if necessary. ;) SEbasic 09-01-2005, 06:37 AM I thought I needed to overwrite all the 3.0.8 files when I upgrade? Upload all files from the 'upload' folder in the zip, with the exception of install/install.php and includes/config.php.new I *tried* it last night and ended up reverting to 3.0.8 as I just kept getting DB errors... I'll give it another go this evening - I'm really keen to get the forum in a semi-finished state... Joeychgo 09-03-2005, 12:42 PM How did it work out? SEbasic 09-08-2005, 05:42 AM Managed it just now - took about 15 mins in total... Moderation in 3.5 is easy... Gotta love that ajax ;) | |
