A shout box is usually a little app that lets users just throw up a line or two of text for everybody else to see. Think of it like an office bulletin board, you can just pop anything you'd like up there for everybody to see, and it doesn't really have to pertain to anything else that's up there.

Not sure -- but I might try an experiment

I'm neutral on this. I don't think it's a big enough thing to detract from forums like online chat would be (especially young ones), but some people love them.

ive heard a lot of people say that shoutboxes are good. when people are board it can help keep them on your site longer - there isnt really a downside as it isnt really drawing peole away from posting like a chat room or arcade would.
