What are these exactly, and what do the do?

I understand that if a site(we'll call it CNN ;) ) Posts a news article that the RSS bot will grab that article then post it to your site, or whatever else you need

Are there other uses for these? can someone explain in greater detail?

also, is there some special RSS feed maker that i need to have installed on my site so people could retrive posts or something with a RSS reader?

rss feeds allow sites to syndicate their content in a pre-defined format allowing others to display that content on their websites without having to go to your site and copy it. now was takes the rss from the rss format to what is outputted on a page is called an rss aggreatator(sp?). now rss is included in vbulletin by default if you turn on the syndication option in your admincp. then all your threads will be syndicated allowing others to post your content on their websites.

If I have a website and display RSS feeds I'm getting fresh content for my site with no effort on my part - and search engine bots love fresh content making it easy for my users to find related information giving valuable inbound links to another person's site losing my visitors as they head off to follow those links

When people publish the RSS feed from my site I'm getting someone else to publicise my site getting access to users I wouldn't normally have providing fresh content for someone else, they might rank higher in the serps than me getting a stack of valuable inbound links

So there are pros and cons but as a publisher it's sooo worth doing. Just be sure that if you are publishing someone else's feed that you do actually endorse that site. And don't feel pressured to put the feed on your front page.
