Should I advertise on a "competing" board?

what do you think? 75% of the members on there are unhappy with the site, staff and ect....I have talked to about 50 of them and they would be interested in my site very much, now it is up, and I spent the last month tweaking it, is it "wrong" to go pay 10 bucks to get a few houndred members to get the ball rolling?

The staff wont care...

Sure, why not? If their dumb enough to sell you an ad, go ahead.

Exactly, if they allow than there is no issues. Moreover, 10 bucks are too little to get this much members :D

yea its a steal... It has 4225 members...most of the advertised sites are getting 1000 views in the first few months.

I submited it and the deal went through, my post hasnt shown up yet, but they moderate the sections posts.

There are 2 big forums on my sites subject, and one is dying do to a sometimes non existant, and power hungry staff, and one the staff is selling out. So....that leaves me.

I was gouna take over one of the forums, the biggest, and we started to do all of the transffering, I told the other admin all my ideas, and he took them and ran with em. haha. well fortunately, he doesnt know php and messed everything up...

but anyway, sorry, I am excited!

I think forums working together to exchange banners or one selling a banner to the other is a great idea, as long as they are not direct competitors but go after a similar crowd.

Folks that like racing also like to build their own cars, so it does not have to be an exact match or direct competitor.

A domain name forum could sell a banner to a web design forum and it would benefit both forums.

We have the same topics, we are pretty much direct competitors...so why would a person register on a board that has 33 members as apposed to a board with 4000+?

Besides the fact that my staff is cool about a lot more issues, and I have more features.

The question is, what are you calling advertising

Is it posting on the board and leaving your signature, because on webmaster forums you see this everyday, where direct competitors post on a more popular webmaster forum.

Hell if they will let you post and leave a signature, I am sure they would also be happy to directly take your money :)

they dont allow signatures on the site for some reason, the admin doesnt like the look. haha

they have already taken my money.

Do they have Adsense running on the site

If they do that may be another way to get your foot in the door, in fact I like the idea of buying Adwords to get members.

no, the other site does, I may look into that.

Please explain because the reader does not know what "other site" you are talking about here.

Ok well:

Heres the orriginal FMX forums site, prety much, and they are the ones I just got advertising on: www.freestylemtx.com

Here is the "other" FMX forum site, he is the one that said he would give the forums over to me since he couldnt afford it, we started to transfer the info, and I told him all my ideas, and he ran and tried to carry them out: www.fmxaustralia.com

My site is www.globalfmx.net.

on freesytlemtx they have a section called industry announcements, I just went ahead and did that...

FMXaustralia is the one that has adsence.

What I want to do is get the real riders on my forums....

as you can see, my site has more features on it, despite australias attempts to run with my ideas.

Well it is always a danger to tell anyone all of your ideas, maybe you can tell a trusted friend a bit about what you wish to carry out, but never give away the keys to your house.

I tell a few things to the guys around here because I trust them a little, but you never know when todays friend becomes tomorrows enemy.

So you should keep your cards close to your chest in some cases.

Many times the guy you are working with today will be working against you tomorrow, you just can't win at times, most of the time the guy with the money is the one in control and in the drivers seat. You remember the old saying, "money talks and bull**** walks", well that's just business, if you don't have the dime, folks won't give you much time or consideration (human nature you will have to deal with), everyone kisses the rich man's ass.

If his cash flow fails and yours holds up you will have an advantage if he wants a ready buyer.

Only time will tell, but use your brains next time before you "give away" your ideas.

Find a forum with a small logo and put your 728x90 under it.

There are a few webmasters at active forums that don't 'get it' and would sell you the spot for a fair price.

The thing you are missing is this, you don't have to steal the members from the other forum, you can advertise your forum on other sites, like the sites of the manufacturers of the bikes.

You can buy banners on the magazines websites that cater to the industry also, there are also trade shows and race organizer sites you can buy banners on.

Think of the sites your target member goes to all the time, run a survey on your forum and find out what sites your members go to and buy ads on those sites.

If you don't want to go through all of the above just buy ADWORDS and the ads will hit all the motorcycle sites out there.

Top placement of "motorcycle" is 40 CPC.

I'm sure other variations can be had for less.

Well the problem is its such a small group of athletes, and the ones that are online our on those forums....I really dont want the public to be to aware of the site to much...thats because there are a lot of "posers" and wana-bees that swamp these types of forums. I could ban them, but I know that would get old fast. I just want the word to get out a little, so I wont advertise other than the mtx forum.

Well long story short, they took my money and banned me, then gave some of it back because some of my members posted links of videos I hosted on my site. haha

Some great quotes here:

you have the next amazing web site in Moto-X and best of luck - buck up and just build your castle on your own like I did - I wont let a better site that will steal all my users get posted.

LOL I asked if I could still be a member, I have only been participating on the site daily for the past few years....I tryed to work it out, told her I didnt want to steal anything from her....

but noooo...."Women"

The staff wont care...You have to give $10.00 to the competition to put your ad up? I personally wouldn't do it, but if you think you can poach users, then go for it!
