vBGarage is a small photo gallery that magnus coded back last year. It won hack of the month even. But unfortunatly, there is no qualty control for hacks, they are just that, hacks. The code was absolutly terrible.

Once folks started using it, myself included, we found that it could be attacked by kiddie scripters and the coding of the images handling would bring a server to a very heavy load.

Well magnus was unavailable, so I fixed my own. Magnus didn't show up still and people were panicking. So I PM'd magnus for permission to post the fixes. He agreed and I did.

Then the folks saw me step up to the plate and began to point out other problems which I addressed and fixed. They also asked for features.

I got the ideas for these features from ideas and suggestions of others, looking at other photo galleries and examples of code from magnus.

Well I used all of the ideas, but the code didn't fit, however the idea did. But it was not an idea that about several hundred other people didn't have as well.

So anyway, two versions later, vBGarage is meerley a memory of what magnus did, I had totally revamped it. I included credits to magnus as well.

We're talking comparing a program of 400 lines to what today is now over 2000 lines of code. We're talking about speed and server load improvements of over 1000% in more then one place and there are no longer posting security issues.

Now I'll be damned if after all this work I have to continue to walk on eggshells as to whether vBGarage is mine or not. The code certainly is. But the name I don't think I own.

So I threw vBGarage away and moved on.

It has been stated that magnus has a copyright on the name and the 3.1.1 code of vBGarage. I own the code in the 4.0.x and 4.1.x series. So the logical thing to do was end the project and move on. He has his code and I have mine. I defy anyone to show me a similarity between my 2000 lines of secure code with his 400 lines of broken code. Then there are features, my code has many many new features that are my idea alone.

Now to be fair to magnus, he didn't cry copyright, people that have no business in this and absolutly no idea how copyright works nor are attornies did. But to avoid any perception of impropriety on my part, I have taken action to be sure that can't happen in fact.

So when the time comes, I'll release my photo gallery that is in no way compatable with vBGarage. Since the perception from some, again some who have no business in this, is that I'm stealing, those that want a vBGarage can complain to them. They made it die and created the copyright situation. Because of it, I won't use the vBGarage name and no one can use my vBGarage code to do an upgrade.

There will be a new photo gallery, vBPicGallery.

Good luck to magnus, he was a good guy to me. Other's want to start trouble though, I hope to get the time with magnus to put this to bed.

It is real simple, if it is your original code, there is nothing that anyone can do to stop you from singing your own songs that you wrote and you need not pay anyone royalties either.

Exactly, but I'm a perfectionist. Mine will be great!

I held back before because I knew this day would come. Now I'm coding all out. I have alot of great ideas I'm implementing. Of course there will be vague similarities to the past and maybe even other galleries. But take a look at a forum home page. None of them are original by any means. There has to be a similarity just because that's what people want.

A better back end is something I can give those that want a gallery so that they get the desired result from the display without killing a server or worring about posting attacks.

I'm trying my best anyway.

Greetings to you and the others here on this forum! I just saw where you had dropped the support or any future development of vbGarage on another forum and wanted to extend a belated "Thank You" for all of the work that you did do on vbGarage.

I, as I am sure others will be, anxious to see your new hack. Please accept my early Kudos & support to you in this endeavor.

I am still presently fine tuning my site 3.0.7 before public release...in the meantime, if you need a beta tester, please just let me know.

Just as a suggestion for a name: vBPixGallery vs vBPicGallery...but whatever you decide, you may want to copyright it to prevent any chance of someone else claiming as theirs if you had not already done so. Not trying to be a smart A$$ or anything...just trying to help.

My goal is to leave no one out in the cold. Anyone that has a database, I'll make a provision to do a transfer for. It will be much like the products you see to convert one forum to another, but for converting one gallery to another.
