Forum Jump Menu

I use these a lot for quick navigation. They're (usually) not difficult to add -- any plans to do so here (including on the main index page would be nice)?

The old forum jump drop down menu....

I think they have these on vBulletin Minstrel, they are on some of the special pages, but not on every page.

Hey David, what exactly are you referring to...? What do you feel we should add...?

I usually add a 'Go to Top' button in the postbit templates that deos as it says on the tin.. takes the viewer to the top of the forum.:)

Jump boxes are drop down menus with links to all the forums, usually situated at the bottom of each page.

I favor them on each page, as long as there is a drop down that says "find Minstrel's last 25 posts now" :D :wave: :p :p

I have used one of these on my new PDA/Mobile style on tMP. Looks great on my iPAQ.

I think this is something you can enable around the vB Options area. Something about enabling Drop Down Site Navigation.

The forum jump list is considered a performance hit. Some don't use it. I have no idea what Joe plans to do.

How does it do that? I can't say I've ever noticed that on phpBB forums...

I would not think it is a big drain on servers, I rarely use those even when available, but maybe some folks do use them to navigate quicker and anything that saves time for members helps the forum.

It would do it on any PHP based application that uses this feature; be that phpBB or vB or IPB. What takes time on the server is the parsing of the php code into the html that produces the elements of the drop down list.

I suppose. But it's not noticeable from the user's point of view...

It comes back to ease of navigation for users. Here, the only navigation is the breadcrumbs at the top of the page which exist ONLY at the top of the page. And to get to another forum from this one, you first have to go back to the forum index page and then scroll down to the forum you want to read.

That's a lot of work for the user. And I just don't think that's very user-friendly. And if you want return visitors and frequent posters to your forum, I'd suggest you want to make it as easy as possible for them to get around.

Every forum I've ever turned them off on, I got instant feedback on.

The members were clear, turn it back on NOW!

If you have a lot of forums you may want to disable the Forum Jump menu, although it makes only a marginal performance hit, it can generate a large amount of HTML.

I turned it on to make you guys happy :D
