I use these a lot for quick navigation. They're (usually) not difficult to add -- any plans to do so here (including on the main index page would be nice)?

Forum Jump Menuminstrel 07-01-2005, 12:05 PM I use these a lot for quick navigation. They're (usually) not difficult to add -- any plans to do so here (including on the main index page would be nice)? AnthonyCea 07-01-2005, 12:58 PM The old forum jump drop down menu.... I think they have these on vBulletin Minstrel, they are on some of the special pages, but not on every page. theMusicMan 07-01-2005, 01:00 PM Hey David, what exactly are you referring to...? What do you feel we should add...? I usually add a 'Go to Top' button in the postbit templates that deos as it says on the tin.. takes the viewer to the top of the forum.:) minstrel 07-01-2005, 01:10 PM Jump boxes are drop down menus with links to all the forums, usually situated at the bottom of each page. AnthonyCea 07-01-2005, 01:13 PM I favor them on each page, as long as there is a drop down that says "find Minstrel's last 25 posts now" :D  :p :p theMusicMan 07-01-2005, 04:33 PM Jump boxes are drop down menus with links to all the forums, usually situated at the bottom of each page. Aha... sorry, got the lingo mixed up. I have used one of these on my new PDA/Mobile style on tMP. Looks great on my iPAQ. MXjunk127 07-01-2005, 05:51 PM I have em on my forum, you guys should aslo??? dont they come with vb??? Michael 07-02-2005, 03:25 AM I think this is something you can enable around the vB Options area. Something about enabling Drop Down Site Navigation. noppid 07-02-2005, 10:07 AM The forum jump list is considered a performance hit. Some don't use it. I have no idea what Joe plans to do. AnthonyCea 07-02-2005, 10:17 AM You mean Joey, right Noe   minstrel 07-02-2005, 10:22 AM "a performance hit" meaning it takes additional resources and/or slows down forum access? How does it do that? I can't say I've ever noticed that on phpBB forums... AnthonyCea 07-02-2005, 10:32 AM I would not think it is a big drain on servers, I rarely use those even when available, but maybe some folks do use them to navigate quicker and anything that saves time for members helps the forum. theMusicMan 07-02-2005, 10:46 AM "a performance hit" meaning it takes additional resources and/or slows down forum access? How does it do that? I can't say I've ever noticed that on phpBB forums... It would do it on any PHP based application that uses this feature; be that phpBB or vB or IPB. What takes time on the server is the parsing of the php code into the html that produces the elements of the drop down list. minstrel 07-02-2005, 10:55 AM I suppose. But it's not noticeable from the user's point of view... It comes back to ease of navigation for users. Here, the only navigation is the breadcrumbs at the top of the page which exist ONLY at the top of the page. And to get to another forum from this one, you first have to go back to the forum index page and then scroll down to the forum you want to read. That's a lot of work for the user. And I just don't think that's very user-friendly. And if you want return visitors and frequent posters to your forum, I'd suggest you want to make it as easy as possible for them to get around. noppid 07-02-2005, 11:15 AM Every forum I've ever turned them off on, I got instant feedback on. The members were clear, turn it back on NOW! AnthonyCea 07-02-2005, 11:17 AM ....it can't hurt, plus we don't want to upset Minstrel, he can be real mean  :D  minstrel 07-02-2005, 01:16 PM  Mean? Moi? I don't have a mean bone in my body... :o AnthonyCea 07-02-2005, 01:23 PM .....you really are a hell of a nice guy Minstrel   minstrel 07-02-2005, 01:29 PM Aww... thanks, AC... :D :D :D AnthonyCea 07-02-2005, 01:43 PM ....toward the "Rat Pack" and DMOZ, sorry Minstrel   Joeychgo 07-05-2005, 06:27 AM If you have a lot of forums you may want to disable the Forum Jump menu, although it makes only a marginal performance hit, it can generate a large amount of HTML. I turned it on to make you guys happy :D AnthonyCea 07-05-2005, 07:32 AM make me happy Joey....Did you send my check this month yet   PS: Tell Noppid I have not got his check either   minstrel 07-05-2005, 08:01 AM Thanks, Joey! Looks good. Works as it should. And I do really use them all the time. :D | |
