thread subrscription / user cp

I would like to be able to have a user automatically subscribe to a thread upon these actions:

- the user creating the thread
- a user replying to a thread (normal reply and quick reply)

i can't seem to find out how to make this work.

Edit Options -> Messaging & Notification -> Default Thread Subscription Mode -> Instant email notification
