Joeychgo 09-28-2005, 09:41 PM vBulletin 3.5.0
Jelsoft today released vBulletin 3.5.0 Gold.
vBulletin 3.5.0 is now considered a stable and supported release, superceding the 3.0.x series. The techies at Jelsoft now recommend that all customers upgrade to 3.5.0 to take advantage of the new features and improvements. However, Jelsoft will continue supporting 3.0.9 for the forseeable future, providing security fixes as necessary.
Changes of note since 3.5 RC3
Cookie paths and cookie domains are now selected from a drop down or a text box as an override (if you're really sure). This should help prevent invalid cookie paths/domains from being set.
Merging a thread now merges into one of the existing threads instead of a new one, also giving an option to replace the other threads with redirection notices.
External.php has returned to retrieving data based on the time the thread was originally posted. (An index was added to optimize this query.)
Some additional hooks
Changed Files
Consider all files to have changed since the 3.0.x series.
Congratulations Jelsoft on a great new version of vBulletin Forum Software!

IPB 2.1 who? :P
minstrel 10-30-2005, 11:11 PM Two questions:
1. is there a difference between vB 3.50 and vB 3.50 "Gold"?
2. does a vB license qualify the owner for upgrades, as with certain shareware, or is it a new license for each update, as with major applications like Office?

1. No. Gold is a term vB uses to describe it's "stable" release. Previous to this, there were beta and RC.
2. A license grants the owner access to downloads for one year. After that, it costs $30 for each additional year.
sarahk 10-31-2005, 01:34 PM You get free upgrades for a year I think and before it expires you get a flurry of emails encouraging you to ensure that you are on the latest version.
I just upgraded a client to 3.5 the day before yesterday - and now I see there's a newer version, grrr!
Still it was painless and even the bits of the template that wouldn't work were handled well and the site looked good. I just had to move some code from the phpinclude_start section to the plugins global section (straight cut and paste, no editing) and it worked. Very cool!

I found the upgrade very easy (cross that there is a new version released the very next day after I'd waited a bit before upgrading) and just had to move some code (unedited) from the old includes section to the plugins section.
bassnutz 10-31-2005, 02:34 PM All the "Gold" means is that it's the stable release.
As long as you're license is current, you can download any upgrade.

I was under the impression that a license is $80 USD per year or $160 USD for a lifetime license...
1. is that correct or did I screw it up somewhere?
2. if it is correct, does that means a lifetime license gets you a "current license" for life with all upgrades as they come along?

$80 a year is for a leased license, $160 means you own your copy. But, if you have owned a copy for over a year and would like to download an upgraded verson, you'll need to pay $30 for a one year renewal.
Leased License - $85
A leased license grants you the right to run vBulletin on one web server and one web site for each license purchased for 1 year from the date of order. Each license may power one instance of vBulletin on one domain. During the year, you will have unlimited access to the member area, where you can download updated versions of the software. At the end of the year, you must purchase another license in order to continue to run vBulletin.
Owned License - $160
An owned license grants you the right to run vBulletin on one web server and one web site for each license purchased for an unlimited time. Each license may power one instance of vBulletin on one domain. Included in this package is one year's access to the member area, where you can download updated versions of the software. If you require access to the member area after the year has elapsed, you can renew your access for $30 per year.
minstrel 10-31-2005, 07:11 PM Okay.
Supplementary question, then:
Why on earth would anyone want the leased license?
webfreak08 11-01-2005, 04:08 AM Maybe they only need it for a year.
In reality, to answer your question, I have no clue.

Because if your starting a new forum that may or may not succeed, why spend $160 when you can spend $85? Some people are gun shy.
minstrel 11-01-2005, 07:10 AM Ok, thanks. I thought maybe I was missing something.
If a year license was $30 or something, I could see it - I just don't see spending that much for something that's after two years you will have bought a permanent license.

I would say most of the leased sales are kids that got mommies CC and played forum for a while. Just read some posts at vbulletin.com and you'll see my point. The kids out number the professionals by many.
