Why do they go?

I am curious about what reasons do you think that users get bored at forums? My site for example was very busy for a while and then all of the users dissapeared. I am still not sure where they all went, it seems that they just got bored? Now I am having huge difficulty getting new members and posters. Only about 1-2% of the members post, and that gets boring for me after a while when the ideas that are being thrown around become "stale"

So here is my question, why do people get bored with a forum, and what are some ways that you can prevent it?

mostly the members who are used to not seeing new threads they usually don't go back...have you checked other boards?

There are a lot of forums, millions of them now, so there must be a draw factor that will cause folks to come back, either they need the forum for business ideas or they come back to fool around with their friends for fun everyday!

A mix of the above in addition to administrators and moderators that members like will keep the members coming back, many times the administrators are the main reason members hang around long term, if they "don't like" the administration, they will not remain members very long! :o

You gota to run the bar right or they will not drink there very long!

One thing I do is send mailings. I use the commbull hack for newsletters, and once in while I send all members that havent posted an email asking them to visit. Its seems to help. I know most of the "users logged in today" records occurr when I send those mailings out.

You have to be committed to your forums long term, you have to work hard, it is not a get rich quick business!

If you are not willing to do this you might use the buy sell section and sell your forum to someone who is willing to work hard and invest the time and money to build it!

I agree completely Anthony.

Agree with what is said above.. hard, hard long term work... admins and mods have to be active on daily basis...
Try to add new features to your forum, contest, awards and real cash for members.
And its true Joeychgo, your combull does the trick i visit here only when i recieve it and its really cool as a reminder.
I already implemented it at mine vb.
patience, hard work and patience again...

Commbull = email newsletter folks!

So you only visit when you get the newsletter?

Maybe you need to set your email notifications to get a notice when someone responds to a thread you posted in! :o

Thanks, I guess that the word is patience. I have been promoting a lot and have been working on new content that will help. My forum is my baby and wouldn't dream of selling it, however lately I have been crazy busy with real work and such.

I will have to think about a monthly newsletter, maybe that will remind the people to show up every once in a while.

Is the Combull hack the way to go? I noticed that there is a mailing list option in the admin area. Is it any good?

It never hurts to stay in touch with your members, Noppid sends me money by PayPal once a week to keep me posting on his forums!

Just like anything else : people have lives.

Sometimes I read book after book after book, then I might stop reading for a month or two.

That's life - constantly changing.

Perhaps some suggestions would work... e.g., creating more categories to post on, hiring forum posters, creating more threads that are easy to reply to, giving incentives when they reach a certain no. of post, etc.

Only about 1-2% of the members post
Perhaps post some threads that make them feel compelled to post a reply....
