When off topic gets ugly!

Any topic that involves money is going to get ugly from time to time but on one forum they have a bit of an issue (http://www.propertytalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5480) right now.

The forum is about property investment and one of the big players seems to polarise people, you know how you don't talk about politics with people you don't know well, this is worse!!!

So, some ex-staff have a problem and are busy logging in from the same IP and waging a publicity war and others feel that the anonymity of the forum is providing refuge where the company has none (despite the company owner posting as "customer services"). Now, the whole debate is off topic because it's about business and employment and not investment per se, but it's on topic because the company is part of the industry.

There are other venomous threads involving the same company and warnings on other sites to avoid the company (including the NZ consumers' watchdog) yet people obviously don't google or do due diligence or they wouldn't be in this mess in the first place. I digress!

The thread has been locked and unlocked and should really be allowed to die a natural death, I reckon.

So, what advice do you have for the site owners and moderators in this situation

oh, and Merry Christmas!

I think it is a great thread that should stay open, the site is not responsible for what it's members post, that should be in the terms and conditions, the forum can not be held responsible for members posts either!

I would leave the thread open and enjoy the attention and the resulting traffic, I hate censorship on any forum Sarah and I think you know that!

It's Nixon's fault.

Hey man, you can be banned for making false quotes of me and posting Nixon stuff in Sarah's fine thread Noppid :o

She really is on to something here, you got to check out this slick guy defending himself in this thread, he is smart and a great writer (propagandist) and public relations guy!

This is good stuff man! :D

Hot, good, gusto, grab it while you can man! :o

I actually like it when it gets ugly!! I like to watch my visitors go to war at each other!! Case in point. (http://www.vgchat.com/showthread.php?t=10195) They don't even get to page two before war breks out!!! :D (Disclaimer: There mostly teenagers, or ex-teenagers that still play video games.) :D

Nice forum Nintendo, gaming is very popular, folks make a lot of money in that business!

Sarah's thread is interesting because you have the issue of legality and it seems the forum administration is worried about letting certain posts stand!

I have an "Anything Goes" section on my board (except for nudes, that has a section of it's own) that has no moderation. I feel that every board needs to have a place to vent about whatever!? In there, they can go to town on any subject matter they so choose.

We had a discussion on that very subject which did in fact turn into a free for all itself! :o

This is the reason for a members only forum that is not spidered, theads that get out of hand can be moved there so the public can't see the disputes, you would have to be a logged in member of the forum to read there!

That was the game plan.

When I first started my forum, the whole thing was a free for all. I needed to add the anything goes section to tone down the rest of the forum in order to get new memebers. So only registered members can see and use that section now. Well, that and the fact I was getting rejected from link directories. :(

Why were you getting rejected by directories again

The last time I did that was in 2000! Made about $100,000 from two Nintendo code sites! Now I make about $10-15 a day from my video game sites. On the boards the visitors are extremely ad-blind!

Fantastic Nintendo, that is proof that if someone knows what they are doing they can make it at this game! :o

Due to adult related content, mostly langauge.

The day of submitting to millions of directories is over anyway, most of them have been devalued already and those that have reciprocal link features are in danger of being labeled as link farms and can do more harm than good.

So you are not missing much, you should be selective on the directories that you even submit to, it they mention reciprocal links at all, move on and find another one that offers free listings with no strings attached.

VBW has a nice directory that you can submit to, I was never asked for a reciprocal link to get in either! :o

PS: anyone read Sarah's thread? :D
