Peggy 12-30-2005, 09:41 PM and I've downloaded the software, made all the changes that were instructed....
and now it tells me i need to make a complete copy of my working forum to practice importing before I do the real one.
I have no idea how to do this. Everyone I asked made it sound soooo easy to import my phpBB board to vB. I'm about ready to cry! :(
I wish I had the $ to pay someone to do this for me, but I don't and it's stressing me out.
kemcolian 12-31-2005, 01:42 AM I don't think this is a difficult task to do so. You are not supposed to create the whole forum again. I think it means you should create a database copy. To do so go to your phpbb backup database , a db file will be downloaded , Run that on another empty databe with the help of phpmyadmin , in impex give the source database informations of that ( newly created ) database . So that if any thing goes wrong , I don't think there will be , nothing will happen to your older forum.
for more info see the vbimpex userguide.
am I right guyz ?
If you need any help contact me or any other sincere fellow @ this forum

You don't really need to make a copy of your existing site, since you're going to be converting it to the new software. The ImPex application will pull in the data from phpBB and set up vBulletin based on that. You can do that a number of times until you get it how you want it.

Exactly.
Peggy 12-31-2005, 07:52 AM Oh trust me, I've been readind that damn ImpEx manual frontwards and backwards. Not hard? So I've been told!!!! Which is why I thought I could do it. :( People say I make things harder than they need to be, but maybe my brain is just short-circuiting, becuz I'm just not getting this.
Someone on the vB forum last night (this morning) told me that I don't NEED to practice importing, just DO it. But what if I lose my forum? I did make a zip of the database tho, so I have that.
What do y'all think I should do.... just import?

so you're saying, just keep importing my site until I get it right?
mikelbeck 12-31-2005, 08:02 AM so you're saying, just keep importing my site until I get it right?
Well, pretty much. Some things are going to be a little funky after the import, you can usually correct them by adjusting the import parameters or in some cases you have to modify the import files. For example, if you use a points system on phpBB (points awarded for posting, etc) and then you want to import those points into vBulletin (such as the uCash mod) it won't work properly unless you add some code to the import files.
The only thing the ImpEx program is going to do to your phpBB data is read it, it's not going to make any changes. So there's no chance of screwing up your old board by doing the import. So just give it a shot and see what the outcome is. What I've done is first do the import into vBulletin, see how it comes out and then tweak it if there's any errors. Then run the import again, it'll erase the imported data as part of the first step. Then check it again, tweak some more if nessary, then import again... And again, and again until I'm happy with it. Then disable the old board, do the final import and enable the new board.
Like I said, give a yell if you want a hand with it.
Peggy 12-31-2005, 08:04 AM oooooooooooooohhhh so importing my board into vB isn't going to close the old board... people will still be able to use the old one til I disable it? If that's the case, I'm gettin' to work right now!

Peggy 12-31-2005, 08:29 AM the import button, as shown in the manual, isn't in my adminCP.... did I do something wrong??
I uploaded the upload folder that contains impex, includes etcetc... to my forums directory. and the manual says to copy the cpnav_impex.xml file found in upload/impex/ to the includes/xml directory, but there's already one there. Do I move it over and overwrite the one there??
sigh

Yes, you overwrite the one in your includes/xml directory. Once you do that, refresh your acp and then the import function will appear.
Also, don't upload the "upload" folder, just upload the folders under it (impex, includes). Then when you're done your path will be for the ImpEx application will be (for example) "forums/impex" instead of "forums/upload/impex".
minstrel 01-01-2006, 12:44 PM Thanks, mikelbeck.
Peggy 01-01-2006, 03:08 PM I want to publicly thank Mikelbeck for the tremendous amount of help he's been to me!! The site is up... for the mostpart, lol. Alot of threads are missing and the members didn't get imported over... there's noone but me and my co-admin in the members list.

I sent you an e-mail about the missing threads... They're there, just not being displayed. By default, the import from phpBB sets the default forum view age to be "30 days", if you change each forum's properties to show all threads, you'll see all of your stuff.
As for the users not being listed in the memberlist, they're not shown because the phpBB import placed them in the "imported users" usergroup instead of "registered users". If you delete that usergroup, they'll be moved into "registered users" and all of your users will be shown in the memberlist.
minstrel 01-01-2006, 04:18 PM It's not easy being greeeeeeeeeeeeen but that's why this forum exists :D
Peggy 01-01-2006, 04:45 PM LOL... yeah you're right!

minstrel 01-01-2006, 08:41 PM Skip the "shoutbox"... they're annoying...
Peggy 01-01-2006, 11:31 PM naw I have a shoutbox on my php board and my members love it, use it as a public chatroom. They'd mutiny if I didnt' have one.
Loco.M 01-01-2006, 11:44 PM the Ajax shout box for 3.5 is very easy to add,, just add a plugin and your done :)
styles are easy too,,
just upload your style to your forums root, and go to acp and upload the XML file ;)

If you're comfortable with vBulletin and want to ditch phpBB altogether, you can delete it now.
