I'm curious as to what your thoughts and strategies are regarding archiving. Do you actually prevent the googlebot, etc. from going into your forum, or do you let it see both the archive and the forum?
If you just let it see the archive, won't you be losing out on the PR generated by all the people who link to your main forum? I know PR doesn't have a lot to do with ranking anymore, but it still has some effect doesn't it?

I prefer to let the bots crawl away.:p :p
Don't concern yourself with PR. It does not equal excellent serp results.
Hey, you can get free ibl's to boost pr by simply posting a blogs or articles in some forums. Just place your anchor text in the blog or article title. (eg)
vBulletin (http://www.vbwebmaster.com/forums/) - Forum Seo
Forum seo involves.......rest ...of.. article....

I don't see it affecting any pr achieved from ibl's from those people who link to your main forum.

I leave both forum and archive open to spiders. Let them go for it

To each their own. But this is not a good idea in any way shape or form. The evidence is in the minimal pages you have indexed. There are 256 indexed and a potential of over 10,000 that won't show up. :/

Ok, I'm going to compromise on this and allow spiders in with a little restricted access. :)

It would be to your advantage if the infomation you were holding back is not private. Compromise is good.
BTW, I have noticed that site maps work very well to help G crawl. Y too. ;)

I let them crawl everywhere, but for some reason the number of indexed pages with Google varies from day to day... Some days it will show only 700+ pages other days it will show over 20,000. I have seen other sites perform much better and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong any suggestions? This is at www.explorerforum.com
