Ok I've figured out how to delete one but when it comes to replacing a deleted smiley with a disired one I'm kinda lost?

& how do I set a standard set of smileys to remain the same everytime a person wants to post?

Mine are always random..?
I never know whats going to pop up in the smiley list?
I like to set a most commonly used list of smiles

& one last thing concerning smiles...
I my self constantly use smiles..

& when ever I submit the post my smiley window close's as well...
I guess I understand why they did this...
But I'd prefer it always stay open until I physicaly go & close it..http://bestsmileys.com/clueless/4.gif

Thanks for any help you guys can give me..:)

I'll try and help ya...

To fix the smilies from moving around on the smilie window go into your AdminCP and under the Smilie Manger click on the smilie list.. now once in there you should have all your smilies listed.. to have them all stay and not move around all you have to do is number each one in the spot you'd like it to be placed..

i.e. :) 1:mad: 2:p 3:wave: 4;) 5:( 6:D 7:confused: 8 etc.

That should fix that..

best way is to upload the new smilies into the smilies folder on your website host.....

Then - AdminCP -> Smilies -> Add New Smilie -> Add Smilies (Done)

A very important thing to remember though, is that when you're coding the smilie, be SURE to name that sucker something that your users aren't likely to type. Otherwise you could have smilies all over your board!
Example: I always code my smilies with a : in front and a : in back. I also use symbols whenever I can. See the little guy over in the smiley box to the right here? The one that looks surprised? I coded
him : eek : on my forum (close the spaces tho). A smile is either : ) or : smile : (close the spaces). See what I mean?

Yes I want to add a custom Picked by me smiley list of smileys for all my members to have fun with..
Cause right now all I have is the VB default smiles..:o

Peggy
04-19-2006, 09:20 PM
ok! this is easy, so here ya go.....

1) login to your ACP -->> scroll down on the left to the Smilies button and click on that
2) click on Upload Smilie
3)
a. where it says Filename... click on the browse button and find the smilie whereever you have it saved on your puter

b. in the title block, give your smilie a name

c. where it says Text to replace, type in the code you'd have to type to get this smilie to appear in a post. In other words... for a mad smilie you'd give it a code like
Or for an angel smilies give it
Whatever code you give it, be sure it's something that would not be normally typed by anyone so that you don't end up with smilies where there aren't supposed to be any! I always use the : in my smilie codes.

d. Smilie Category... select a category that you want it to go in (assuming you have created any categories)

e. display order... this is just the # of the order in which you want to display this smiley in that category. 1 for first, 2 for second, and so on.

f. click upload button

WAA LAA! :D

Do you have the smilies saved to your hard drive, or are they on the web? Have you uploaded files of any kind to your server before, using an FTP client perhaps?

I'm a bit of a smiley fiend myself, so if there's one thing I know, it's smiley management. :)

WebWheeler, in order to get to the point where you can use that upload area in the ACP, you actually have to copy the smiley files to your server first. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and it's how most people copy stuff from their hard drives to their web servers.

Now, in order to do this, you'll need the host name (usually that's your domain name), an ID (usually something like username@domainname.com), and a password. If you have this information, we can definitely walk you through the FTP process.

If you don't, either you have to get it -- perhaps your web host can help you -- or you have to forget about uploading smilies from your hard drive and just get a bunch of links to the smilies you want to use.

The problem with that last system is that you're basically hotlinking to someone else's server every time one of your members uses the smiley, and that's bad netiquette unless the site specifically allows people to link to their smilies.

So. Here are the next steps for you:
1. Get a host name, id and password to access your server.
2. If you can't get that, make sure the smilies you want to use come from sites that allow hotlinking.
3. Come back here and tell us if you went with option 1 or option 2.

I know it sounds confusing, but you'll be fine if you take it one step at a time. http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/images/smilies/_workload_.gif

Ok thanks for your paitients with me..

Ok Now I have Core FTP & I'm ready for my next lesson! http://bestsmileys.com/school/1.gif

But I have a queston..http://bestsmileys.com/school/2.gif
Do sites have a way of knowing your hot linking because I have noticed when I post something as a link from another site some times it get takin away or do they have it set to change things speraticly?
Yes I understand the bad netiquette envolved here but how would one know?
If it was happening to one of us? http://bestsmileys.com/thinking/6.gif

livius

Okay cool! First thing you want to do is be sure all your smilies are saved in the same place, that none of them have the same exact name, and that you know exactly where they are. Then open Core FTP and fill in the fields on the right.

Site Name - This should be an easily recognizable name for your site. I use FF, my forum's initials.
Host IP/URL - The ip or web address of your site.
Username - The user id with access rights to your server.
Password - The password associated with said rights.

Once you've filled them in, click connect. If all goes well, the connection window will close, and behind it you'll see a window with two sections. On the left are the files and folders on your hard drive. On the right are the files and folders on your server.

In the left pane, navigate to the place you've saved all your smilies. In the right pane, look for a folder called "Forum" and double-click it. Within that, double-click on the "Images" folder. Within that, double-click on the "Smilies" folder.

So what you should see now are the smilies you want to upload in the left pane, and the smilies you already have available on the forum in the right pane.

Click once on one of the smilies on your hard drive (the left pane), then click on the blue "Upload" arrow pointing to the right. You'll find it right about the scroll bar on the left side. That will copy the file from your hard drive to the smilies folder on your server.

Do that again until you've uploaded all the smilies you want. If you feel comfortable, you can hold down the Control key on your keyboard and left-click on several smilies in a row. That will select more than one file at a time so when you click on the blue arrow they'll all be uploaded one after the other.

Once you've copied all your smilies to the server, either use Ohiosweetheart's instructions to categorize them one at a time, or you can categorize them all at once by using the Add Multiple Smilies section right underneath the Add a Single Smiley section.

To use the Multiple option, pick the category you want them to go in from the dropdown menu, leave the path as it is (should be images/smilies), and enter the number of smilies you've just uploaded or an approximation thereof and click "Add Smilies".

Now you'll see them all in a list, and this is where you'll add them to categories, title them, and pick the replacement text. The title is what people see when they hover over the smiley. The replacement is what they type to get the smiley.

By default the filename will be entered into those fields, but most of the smilies you get off the web have bizarre names, so you'll definitely want to modify all that so people will actually be able to remember the smiley text without having to look it up every time. Remember that you only get a maximum of 10 characters including the colons, so that means the text itself should be 8 characters or less.

And that's all the news that's fit to print. Best of luck to you. http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/images/smilies/yay2.gif

You can tell who's been linking to your site by checking the referral logs on the server. I've never done it myself 'cause I don't really care, but it's definitely possible. Some sites actually block hotlinking, so instead of getting a picture you get nothing or a red X when you try to embed it in a post.

That's not strange; that's how it works! That's the beauty of the add multiple smilies feature. You set them all up and then just click add. It would take a lot longer if you had to do them one at a time.

& can i have a link to your Collection? http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/181283/fullsize/Prayer.gif

I don't want to embed it as a link because I'd rather it not be spidered. Many of my smilies are privately commissioned so even though I realize it's the internet and people can and will take what they want, I try my best to keep the collection as shielded as possible out of respect for the artists' intellectual property.
The link also has an unfortunate tendency to crash every browser that tries to load it. It's been that way since the days I only had 900. http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/images/smilies/bluescreen.gif

I do have some great links to some of the best public use smilies out there, though. Here are some of my (and my members') favorites:

Fool's House (http://fool.exler.ru/en/sm_all.htm) - He's a pioneer of the genre. You could have a collection composed of just his work and it would totally rock.
Mazeguy (http://www.mazeguy.net/smilies.html) - aka Mike Perucci. He's the master of the unanimated smiley, including some great little symbols that work well as post icons.
megmoticons (http://mescal.pixelized.ch/smilies/) - A stylistic revision of some of Fool's classics, and also some deviantART smilies.
In Dust Real (http://www.industreal.spb.ru/smiles.htm) - They're totally unique, and maybe a little weird, but in a great way. Some of my favorite smilies of all time come from this small group.
Leo's Icon Archive (http://www.iconarchive.com/) - Not smilies, but lots of them small, cute and useful one way or another.
deviantART (http://www.deviantart.com/) - This is the motherlode. It's an enormous site for artists, which is why they're so particular about requiring permission for use. None of the smilies on the dA legend are public use, nor are the smilies uploaded to the dA Emoticons category. They take copyright really, really seriously. If you want something special for your collection, though, this is where you'll find it. There are brilliant artists who make small basic emoticon packages free for use and download. You just have to register.

No smilies were found that have not already been added

Hmm and I know I put them in the images/smiley folders with all the other ones via my FTP... what gives?

Well I found out that if I add a / before images/smiley so it reads

/images/smiley it lets me get to half of them... but not all of the ones I have in the server folder show up ..

Help me :(

also about 10 of them show up as the infamous red X

Try reuploading them. Make sure they are uploaded as binary, not ASCII. They may need to be in gif format, not png (not sure of that - try converting all the png's to gif's using Irfanview (freeware) (http://www.irfanview.com/) - enable toe context menu options and it will do this as batches. :)
