theMusicMan 02-03-2006, 01:08 AM Me too... catch me on www.vBXtra.com - though I can't for the life of me see how anyone can design a customised vBulletiin style for just $50...!!!
Dj Xclusive 02-03-2006, 01:24 AM Thats called fair pricing. again i said depending on the specifications and 50 is for the most simple designs...It takes maybe a few hours to complete ANY custom skin...people going around charging $150-300 is simply rediculous. its got the point where designers are squeezing every dollar from customers just cuz they know they will pay it.
The vbulletin itself cost 160, why should someone then have to spend just as much if not more to make it one of a kind.
And all you designers know that 9/10 times your over charging customers
theMusicMan 02-03-2006, 08:08 AM I beg to differ Dj... totally. You are talking customised styles here, and that should include a unique design, many customised templates, all images, buttons and statusicons etc. I know from experience that this takes anywhere from 8 hours to sometimes many days to totally customise. Now, if you are designing a style for $50, then you are either not covering your costs, or you are not delivering all of what I elude to.
You can speak for yourself, but just because you decide you can offer fully customised styles for $50 doesn't give you the right to make sweeping comments such as that. When commercial vB styles are available for $20 - $30, how can a customised one cost just $50...??
The maths just don't work out.
Dj Xclusive 02-03-2006, 01:10 PM So u think that for someone to have a completly customized forum he must pay more then the vbulletin board itself. Makes no sense. And for $50 where talkin simple gradients, CSS Style sheet, a Banner and possibly a simple boarder or background design. Again as i said $50is for the simplest of designs. That there is maybe 3 hours of work, if that. That comes out to $15 (from a hobby which is great, more for me) that math works out for me lol. You have people out here charging $300 for as u say 8 hours of work, i say less...thats nearly 40 a hour...
Simply put....

theMusicMan 02-03-2006, 05:38 PM I can earn up to £550/day for my Project Management / Consulting expertise, and I don't charge that because clients will pay that amount... I charge it because I am worth it and I make proposals that demonstrate a return on investment and a forecasted increase in revenue / bottom line for my client. If I were not able to do that, clients wouldn't pay. I ensure customer service, quality and most importantly - delivery.
$40/hour for web development and style design is nothing when this includes 1st class customer service, quality and a guarantee of delivery. I have many clients who have said they have been scammed by low budget customisation skinners, with them taking their money and not delivering. You're entitled to your opinion, as I am mine - and mine is that of... 'pay peanuts get monkeys... low budget - low quality'.
You can't compare the price charged for vB itself to the price of a custom skin. People are not buying a unique bulletin board system, only for their exclusive use, they are purchasing a quality product sold én masse to thousands of people. Try finding out how much you would be charged if you hired a developer to write a piece of software with a specific set of requirements, and only developed for your use. You think that would come out at $170...??? yeah right.
Pricing is structured on the law of diminishing returns, and factors-in items such as project development & production costs with projected sales figures.
KW802 02-07-2006, 09:50 AM I've be curious to see one of these $50 custom styles. {Chuckles to myself} It's always amazing what kids think of prices until they graduate from school and enter the real world.

You can continue feeling stupid now bwahahahaAt 22 you're just a kid and, based upon your remarks, a very immature one yet. Based upon the example you linked to, if people are willing to pay you $50 for that then more power to you. Obviously you've taken the wisdom of PT Barnum to heart.
smacklan 02-10-2006, 07:03 PM hehe...a fool and his money is soon parted. Anyone who would pay $50 for a few gradients and a banner, maybe some buttons is a fool who could do that themselves for free. We're talking custom designs here...not simple css...which btw is what your site is (not knocking it, just saying I wouldn't pay anything for something like that ;))
Dj Xclusive 02-10-2006, 09:03 PM ^^^ I stated thats what the simple $50 skin would consist of several posts ago (which is still custom no matter how u look at it )

Peggy 02-11-2006, 12:05 AM I'm wondering why this thread has stooped to name calling and innuendos. Adults who do that are as immature as the "kids" they're calling immature, imo

Yes, no need to fling insults when trying to have a discussion. I'm really not trying to knock your designs either DJ, it's just that what most people expect when paying for a custom design is quite more involved than what you are describing...but if you let people know upfront what they will be getting for $50, then they certainly can make their own decisions.
