What's Your Forum Theme?

I couldn't figure out where to place this thread, so if it needs to be moved, please feel free admin's ;)

What is the theme/subject of your community/forum? Tell us about it and please provide a link to your site in the title!

I'll start....

Exquisitely Erotic Adult Community (http://exquisitelyerotic.net)

Alot of people automatically think an adult site is a porn site, and that's not true. When I'm asked the difference between the two, I simply say, a porn site is X+ -rated, an adult site is R+ - rated for the over-18 crowd.. The latter is what mine is.
Of course there's discussion on adult material... from sex to fetishes and more. There's also lively discussions and debates on politics, religion, personal relationships, issues like depression, child abuse, autism, etc. We have game threads, Original stories and poetry (written by our members), forums showcasing our members photography skills and image editing skills, and much more.
It's a nice place to make friends, enjoy friendly flirting and have fun

MIND THE age GAP is an online community and support forum for people in age gap or May December relationships. I started this site because my husband is 21 years older than me and I think couples with a big age difference have special challenges that "normal" couples don't have. I was a long-time member on another age gap support site but heavy-handed moderation has inspired me to start my own. My site is only 6 weeks old and it already has over 10,000 posts and almost 100 members! :)

Tilted Forum Project (http://www.tfproject.org)

Just imagine the perfect forum... there ya go.

Ok ok, something more descriptive might help. Well, the 'TFP' is over 4 years old, we've got thousands of active users, and every single one of them loves it there. It's a "general" topic forum, meaning it has sections for discussions on all topics. However what makes it special is the level of maturity and the open attitude of the whole community. Nowhere else can you ask for advice on your sex life, voice your opinion of George W Bush, and cheer for your favorite sports team -- and receive high quality, mature and educated responses... assuming you are mature to begin with.

We have people from all over the world, representing many different cultures and opinions. We really think we have something special here.

Thanks for reading.

Hello,

My site is WNYPoker.com (http://www.wnypoker.com/forums/). It is a growing poker discussion forum, but the unique niche is that the core/active member base is mostly from the Western New York region. It's nice since we have a lot of players that participate in the forums, offline, and together for online poker events. A unique challenge is keeping things under control since sometimes the members start to tire of seeing each other all the time and go a little nuts. Has anyone else had to deal with these sorts of "family" (couldn't think of a better word) issues?

My forum is a community based site, I actually took it over from someone else who wasn't able to take care of it, its for those that live in North East Pennsylvania, better known as the Pocono Mountains, it is actually a 4 county area there. The site used to have a membership of over 600, but right now just has 38 members because it had been overrun by 300+ spammers. I am hoping to rebuild it to its former prominence and greater.

The other is a website and forums aimed completely at women, where we can chat about anything and everything from Fashion, Health & Beauty, Parenting, Celeb gossip and loads more. http://www.girliegossip.com ( Any of the female users here are more than welcome to join the forums by the way, I need as many friendly faces as possible over there! lol.) :)

My site's theme is business, but there's more to it than just business chat. I'm horrified at how small and medium sized businesses are being worked over by big business interests, manipulated officials and politicians. Let alone organised labour. We are the silent majority of most economies.

My goal is to help equip smaller business owners to compete better and stand up for themselves, as well as lobby in areas of smaller business's interests. Between the internet and the forum medium, I think this is a viable exceptionally low cost option of putting together a small enterprise representative organisation with excellent communication, transparency and democracy. The big challenge is most small business owners are more focused on surviving than thriving. "I'm too busy to..." fight for a fair deal? Most are happy to bitch and moan at the injustice, but aren't prepared to do anything about it.

Having travelled a fair bit, I suspect much of this is relevant pretty well anywhere, although at this stage my focus is particularly South African in terms of the lobbying and representation aspect. But who knows, maybe some international chapters would be in order :D

If you can relate to any of this, why not join up. Who knows where it could end up one day.

Anyway...back to topic  lol

I have an immigration site that covers family based immigration to the US (http://www.familybasedimmigration.com/forum/index.php). I was and have been a very active member of a well known immigration board for a couple of years, having immigrated to the US successfully after my marriage to my US hubby. I developed a passion for US immigration law and helping where I can to assist others in navigating the sometimes complex US immigration system. My site is aimed at pointing members in the right direction to research their own immigration case as leaving it open to just asking questions and getting answers from the masses can be fraught with danger when that information is not correct. Its only been in operation a couple of months and so far we have 150 members. Member posting is slow going at times but that's ok, as this board is geared more towards research with questions asked if they cant find the information they are looking for.

Heh, this 9-year relationship is is the third time in my life I've gone with a woman 13 years older than me.

Back to topic, I'm an admin on subaruoutback.org. It is one of many Subaru boards, but as far as I know it's the only one centered on Outbacks. Most of the other boards are for go-fast Imprezas and Legacy GTs, etc., and their tone tends to get nasty and competitive, lots of fragile young egos. Or, there are offroad boards, and those can be nasty in similar ways.

(But, I've never seen anything get nastier that some BBQ boards I've been on, stuff like "Tell us where you live so me and some buddies can stop by...")

We on the other hand are mostly family people and a lot of outdoorsy types. Since Subaru is popular among gays we have a lot of them, but they don't adtertise that part of themselves much. Several members modify their cars, some for speed but also some for lift and off-roading.

We shoot comments and advice back and forth a lot, share trip pictures and how-to maintenance tips and pics, and warn each other of common dangers like the crappy head gaskets some of those engines are known for. We have always had a freindly tone and our members almost never snip at each other, though one of our mods can be a bit of a grammar nazi sometimes. We have a strong tradition of greeting new members, which has proven to be a really good board community-building tool, because people feel drawn in and involved right away.

I've been exploring my capabilities to clean up and modify the site, though there's a lot I don't know about vbulletin (which is why I came here) and php. Still, I've been able to clean up dead links, out-of-date copyright notices, and other crud. I've added links and graphics, and kept a conversation going with the people at mod and super-mod levels.

But I was feeling kind of alone since the other two members holding admin status were almost never there. So I polled the mods, and we recently promoted a new admin who knows a lot more about coding, and he has done a lot to improve the place. In the last half a year or so we have gained more administrative control access (at the server level, which is what it took to edit the home page) and we have adopted a take-control attitude. It has been a blast!

One funny thing is, we're all walk-ons, no one is paid anything. I was unaware of the concept of a board being something that can be bought and sold, until I came here. We are not using any of the online store elements, or making any financial transactions. I suppose the server owner (who created the board) is getting paid for the google ads - otherwise I would delete them in a heartbeat for more reliable page loading.

Ok, I'll give it a shot.

Shadows of Hyrule (http://www.shadowshr.com/)

The Shadows of Hyrule is a young web-site that focuses on gaming. However, the Shadows do tend to branch out into other subjects as well. I've got Gaming, Fan arts/fics, reviews, entertainment, and even a spam board. We are still working on developing the site, but we just got a temporary skin and temporary home page set up. With 57 members, the Shadows aren't very big, but they are slowly growing.

Hope to see you there :P

Oh, Lordie, okay, here goes, LOL.

I have a forum that I've had for several months. When I first launched it I was surprised to see how quickly it picked up, gaining many new members instantly and of those that joined, most of them were extremely active. Needless to say, I was thrilled. Unfortunately, over the past couple of months or so things have slowed right down to a snails pace and I have no clue as to how or why and most of the members have seemed to disappear into thin air.

The forum itself is kind of a mix of "a little of this and a little of that" although it originally started off as mostly online business related stuff. When it started to slow down I added several different new "things" to the forum to try and draw interest back to it; posting contests/games, pet section, entertainment section, adults only section, chatroom, free advertising area, over 50 popular arcade games and more. Unfortunately, nothing seems to be helping to kick it back up to anywhere near where it used to be and I can't understand it or figure out why.

Anyway, if anyone is interested in checking it out, joining, or even offering some advice (regardless of how small) on what I may try to do to get it active again I would very much appreciate it. It is a really fun forum; "super" laid back, humorous, giddy, and full of non-stop laughs but, unfortunately, there are only a few of us even left there to laugh with one another so that's kind of a bummer.

Okay, enough of my big yap for now, LOL. If anyone would like to do me the favor of taking a boo at it, join, offer advice, or whatever, I'd be more than happy to do the same for you.

Thanx a million.

ahh I see it's a phpBB forum. Are you thinking about making the leap to vBulletin? You know what, I would love too but I wouldn't even have the first clue how. I have zippo experience in website setups, etc. Do you think this would be something that a person like me (numbskull would be a good description, LOL) would even be able to do? I'm worried about messing something up and losing all of my current topics, members, etc. The other question would be what kind of cost is involved. Would I need to purchase a script, find new hosting services, etc? I am totally lost in this area but, at the same time, when I come over here to this forum I am sooooooo impressed by it the thought crosses my mind all of the time.

Any advice would be welcomed.

Tara, it is really very easy to change from phpBB to vBulletin. vB has an import script that you install and use to import your phpBB forum into your vB. It's free with the purchase of any vB license.

Yes there is a cost. A 1 yr leased license is $85, an owned license is $160. The difference is this -

With a leased license, you can run the vB forum on your site, download upgrades and get customer support for a period of 1 yr. At the end of one year, you have to either purchase the license again, or remove the forum from your site.
With the owned license, you can run the vB forum on your site for life. However, access to downloads and cs expires at the end of one year, and you may purchase access for a fee of $30 yearly. This is really the better deal, if you can come up with the initial $160 :)

tarab2
04-29-2007, 02:27 PM
Thanx, Peggy, it all sounds great to me.

Yeah, I would probably prefer to go for the full $160 deal right off bat so that is what I will likely do. I don't have the funds right at the moment but I will be able to get them soon enough.

One of the things I especially like is all of the great advice we can find here, that alone was an attention grabber for me right away.

Yep, you'll definitely see me making the switch asap.

When I'm ready, you'll be the first to know.

Thanx again for all of your help.

Tara (the soon to be VB owner, LOL). :D

Peggy
04-29-2007, 02:35 PM
Tara - I do believe that you can purchase the leased license for $85, then upgrade to the owned license within 60 days for just the difference.

Just a thought.

Trust me, moving to a vB forum will be the best move you've ever made

Well, I will play too. My sites theme is loosely based on hot rodding and drag racing Dodge trucks (yes, people actually do that!! We also have sections for all types of cars.). The problem I and members of my board were encountering was that most of the sites relating to this topic where heavily moderated (I think Hitler was running them) and not very off topic friendly. After about 5 of us got banned from a number of them (he he, we were just speaking our minds!!), the idea came about to open a site with the bear minimum of moderation (I fix typos, move threads to appropriate section, and anything a member requests, and thats it), no censorship (thats right, swear all you want!!), and basically no rules (as long as its legal, its good to go). I was a little concerned at first about how nutso it would get there, but quickly learned that if you give people freedom, they pretty much moderate themselves and in the 18 months its been up there hasn't been a single issue. We are approaching 400 legitimate members now, have the highest female to male ratio of any automotive board I know of, and its a very very tight knit community. We have whole sections devoted to personal issues, health and fitness, of course the automotive stuff, and also an arcade and NWS section (Google Adsense didnt like that...........). I wanted a place for people to camp out all day instead of jumping from board to board. I have moderators from other Dodge truck boards that are members of my board and dont even read the board they moderate anymore. We talk sex, body functions, you name it. We have a daily post whore thread for people just to post in non stop, like a chat room. In one 24 hour period we had 229 pages and 3,425 posts on just one thread!!! We have a poll on how much people enjoy "polls". Ah, the sexual innuendos fly on my board!!! Anyways, here it is! Devilbrad.com (http://www.devilbrad.com/index.php) The name doesnt really imply what the board is, but I'm actually very well known in the Dodge truck community, so it works. I'm still working on the colors and style of the board over a year later, I have a mirror site I use for testing and need to get Photoshop back so I can make some gradients and buttons, but soon it will be how I want it. Enjoy and feel free to join!

This is a forum for everyone living in the state of Ohio. There are forums for issues such as state government, education, local attractions, entertainment, sports, and more. We even have a section for teens called TeenTalk!

I've been working very hard on this forum (which is why I haven't been here much), and still busy decorating the place. I'll be adding an arcade, chatroom, and photo gallery in the near future.

In the meantime I'm busy with SEO, linking and advertising.

The board is about Aibos (Sony's autonomous robotdog) and has a small community (aibos are not very common) but the members love the site.
The reason i made it is because the webmaster of the first site asked donations to keep the site online and then suddenly dissappeared and took the site with him

For those who don't know what Aibos are, here's a picture:
http://www.aibo-forum.nl/greenish/images/logo.jpg
Or better yet, a video one of the members made of her Aibo:

And a small video of someone who explains some of the things a 7m3 can do.

My theme is forum for expetriate women. I have a lot of competition, but I still enjoy my new forum that is about 6 months old. I also have another professional forum that is abandoned by me. I can't multifunction, so one thing at a time.

WNYPoker.com is a poker forum for players in and around Western New York.

They are mostly Buffalo poker and Rochester poker players.

The forum has quite the personality, and some nifty addons like a big arcade too.

You're right, that's not bad at all.

I clicked on your link, but after almost 2 mins of waiting for it to load, I gave up :(

EDIT - I tried again after a couple of mins and it loaded for me. Probably just a glitch.
I LOVE your forum theme.

My forum is just getting started. It's a place where anyone over 18 can come and flirt with other members. Once we get it going, I think alot of friendships will be made.

WheeeHooooooooooooooo, I'm back!!!

Hi guys & gals, long time no see.

Sorry, I've been busy, busy, busy.

Now, I have a little more time on my hands so, needless to say, here I am!

Thank God, I was really starting to miss things here.

Anyway, now that I'm here, can someone please "re-update" me on all things V-Bulletin?

I have a new(ish) forum which is currently SMF; not bad, but, er...not V-Bulletin, either, lol.

Anytime I want to change something (colors, fonts, sizes, etc) it's a pain in the arse because I have very little experience with this particular board and finding answers for my queeries is no easy task.

Sooooooo......

any details on "how" to go VB would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not really sure "what" I need to know, but I'm assuming finding out the cost of using VB would be a mighty fine place to start.

Any details after.....pure bonus!

Thanx everyone.

Looking forward, hopefully, to a VB switcheroo asap (MUCH better info/advice/help to be found here).

Friendlier, too! LOL

Thank you again! :bighug:

By the way...YOU ROCK!!! :D

Welcome back!

As far as vBulletin goes, an owned license is $160 USD, with a $30 USD annual license renewal fee. A leased license is $85 USD/annually.

Pick your poison, download the package and a copy of ImpEx to import your SMF data into vB and you're good to go.

Can someone tell me "where" to even find these 'poisons' to begin with?

Are they in the 'Download vBulletin' button at the top right of the page or something?

I'm lost, and I haven't even begun yet, ha ha.

While I wait for a reply, I'll go hide myself under a rock until the blushing stops, lol.

Thanx, everyone!

I am planning on developing a new forum site which will be for architects and architectural students as well as those who are just generally interested in architecture. Its of course going to be called ArchitecturalForums.com, sites not up yet, still working things out with it, but hope to have it online soon.

At the moment we got skin that has been designed by Miner, which we have customised a bit on the way. Anyways SMCars stands for Scratch Made Cars in 3D and has also massive collection of vehicle blueprints. Based on year 2002.
