Irish the world's loneliest Web users: Google (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060515/tc_nm/ireland_lonely_dc)
Mon May 15, 2006
DUBLIN (Reuters) - Ireland may be enjoying stellar economic growth and seen as one of the best places in the world to live, but its inhabitants are apparently also the globe's loneliest.
Google Trends, which works out how many searches have been done via the Internet search engine on particular terms, showed the word "lonely" was entered most frequently by Internet users in Ireland: http://www.google.com/trends?q=lonely.
The Irish, enjoying new-found wealth and a flood of immigration following more than a century of economic decline, are followed in the misery stakes by residents of Singapore and New Zealand -- although Singaporeans are the most frequent searchers of "happiness."
Google Trends calculates the ratio of searches for a given term coming from each city, region or language divided by total Google searches coming from the same area.
Ireland's capital, Dublin, topped the city list for "lonely" searches, followed by Melbourne, Australia and Auckland, New Zealand.
In 2004, the Economist magazine named Ireland the best place to live in the world in a "quality of life" assessment.

I'm not sure the Irish are the most lonely, surely that goes out to the people of Birmingham (http://www.google.com/trends?q=porn&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all)
Portsmouth is even more depressing

At least this article finally answered the age old question posed by The Beatles in Eleanor Rigby:
All the lonely people
where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
where do they all come from?
Do these people look lonely?
This place is going to be really lonely if I keep causing people to leave  - I am now convinced I am some kind of jinx.
Anyway, that picture is awesome. We don't let a little rain affect us

They are likely at home preparing a hot meal for their men who have had a hard day. Drinking beer in knee deep water is tough work.

No. This is Ireland. You only have two choices: at home or at the pub.

Just had a play on the trends tool
http://www.google.com/trends?q=andrew+king
Andrew King is my husband and we live in Auckland, NZ.
His site is at www.propertyinvestor.info and he doesn't rank for his own name.
The local version of Google has AdWords from a competitor targetting his name: http://www.google.co.nz/search?q=andrew+king
So, Google thinks he's irrelevant yet look at which location searches for the phrase Andrew King most often
I know the SEO rules but you'd think they'd have some tool to look at why all these people don't find what they're looking for!
ahhaa.. women don't work in Ireland?
Times have changed and most young women are well educated, do work, and own homes on their own. 10 years ago it would have been much different.
So, in that particular picture, the wives would probably actually be at home cooking dinner or something similar. A lot of women of that era also wouldn't even hold a drivers liscence, etc
Part of Irelands recent economic success and vibrant economy over the last 5-6 years has been fueled by so many women entering the workforce.

Go ladies!!! :D
Go ladies!!! :D
The flip side is inflation due to so many people entering the workforce and now it takes 2 incomes to buy a house anywhere in the country (I know its been that way for a long time in most countries)...Kids are being raised by stranges in creches, then unsupervised while both parents work until late.
Add into that a rocketing population which has made commuting a disaster for most people and now the reverse is happening where women are complaining that they have no choice but to work and can't be homemakers.
lol

And once they do, they take advantage of the inflated real estate market, sell those homes, and move to Canada where the men aren't standing around in puddles drinking beer all the time.

Fish is healthy - contains omega-3 EFAs which helps the brain, heart, and GI system - drinking beer in puddles just gives you liver damage, destroys the thalamus in your barin so you can't remember anything, and encourages pneumonia and bird flu.
No wonder your women are all coming here. :D

I'm not gonna engage this, but every woman from canada I met has told me they come south for men. That the canadian men are not very engaging to women despite that the men appear very manly in their habits.
So anyway, thanks for the help. We love it when they come to Florida. :D

Actually, that doesn't sound like Irish women... that sounds like Irish sheep. Although I understand that Irish men get women and sheep confused all the time.

I don't remember that...When I first started posting on forums I used to get tons of questions about Ireland...I remember giving one guy a whole itinerary of places to go when he was visiting.
I'm curious what the question was...PM it again so I can read it before I ignore it :D
