well there are like 3 million users on myspace.
and..
there are programs you can buy that you can add 100's if not 1000's of ppl to your friend list.. then some ppl will send out messages to all their "friends" and tell them about your site :)
the programs to get friends are like 50$. I've been thinking about buying one

I have tested these a lot and they seem to only have any success (and its pretty small) if your site is aimed at 13-17 year olds. So if you have a smilie, ringtones or social networking site you may get some return on your money. Otherwise I wouldn't spend any money on it.
MySpace is the devil incarnate... Them and Piczo.
Hotlinking, spam, perversion etc. It really is a sorry place. In fact, a lot of Yahoo advertising publishers got kicked off the Yahoo programme because they recieved a lot of poor traffic from MySpace.
That said, I do have a fake profile on there for one of my site's characters. She get's some sickening questions, but the traffic is lame. That said - a few people have mentioned they get big hits from MySpace. Personally, I hate it... But if your marketing to that group - it can be beneficial and a necessary evil.

ya, thats the problem..
there have been a lot of perversion on myspace, and a lot of pedophiles going after kids.
as you said, if your targeting 13-17 year olds it may not be a bad idea to get some traffic.

now that's just sick.
now that's just sick.
Recently, there was a young lad who thought he was talking to a girl and after a month or two she wanted to meet...She said he had to meet her older brother first to make sure he wasn really who he said he was (ironic). Anyway, it was this older guy all along and when he picked the kid up, he said he had to make one stop. He ended up getting him into a Motel room and luckily the kid was able to escape.
The older guy was a major sexual predator and I think the story said something about him intended to kill the kid when he was done (If I'm not mistaken he confessed that to police)
Anyway, the abuse of social networking is all over the news...I hate to think of the stories where the police weren't notified. Scary stuff.

That's a tough demographic to make money off of. You have to be trendy and fast on your feet.

Neither of which I am...The service I used (I actually got it free as they were hoping to get a favourable review) sent PMs or something to all the people on their buddy list. It was like 10,000 people. Pardon my terminology as I haven't really used mySpace directly myself.
Anyway, I tested it with several different anchor combinations and a few different products. Out of the 10,000 I had 0 visits for one ad and the most "Teen Friendly" got around 50, none of which bought anything.
If you put that against a CPC program like AdWords, it isn't even worth your time, nevermind what the guy (and others) was/were charging.
I know some people that had made a few bucks in the early days but its so flooded right now, I don't think they are seeing the returns they used to.

why don't they shut down ebay because some ppl are ripping ppl off ;)
see what i mean ?
this is really getting off topic, I'm asking if anyone has used myspace to promote their own site ;) lets try and talk about that

Personally, I would never consider such a marketing option, ever. How is this different than spam? It just doesn't seem like a legitimate way to get users. Just my opinion, of course.

ya, it seems very much like spam to me too,, but I have seen sites grow because admins doing this :)
but like was said in post 7 that if your targeting a younger crowd, it may help.
