I'm thinking about giving it shot for one of my sites. Have any of you guys ever paid for magazine advertisement to broadcast your forum. Wondering what the cost may be.

I had used magazine ads once when I owned a home improvement site. Of course it was in a home improvement related mag and I beleive the cost was around $800 for a business card size ad. (that was over 5 years ago though)

I just recently started advertising my site in a major magazine, I'm on my second month. It is a little pricey depending on what type of ad you're looking for, I believe it will get your site noticed more & have better name recognition.

Be sure to find the right magazine to maximize greater exposer. The magazine should have all the info in it somewhere that tells you how to advertise, what's required from you, so on & so forth. It's even better if the magazine has a website, you can find everything you need on the site......the right contact, phone numbers, emails, and they should have a PDF file that tell you their going rate.

The magazine I chose had a three month minimum.

For me advertising is critical to bringing new traffic. If you are going to be advertising in a magazine related to your site's theme then it will be money well spent. :) (direct marketing)

Money well spent? By the time the person finishes the magazine, the person is going to forget about the ad and your site. Unless, you have power to put what page the ad is going to be on. If you can, mind as well put it on the back cover or last page.

I would go with magazine ads if the Mag is closely related to the subject of your site. Almost all internet advertising is either blocked or summarily deleted and TV ads are TIVOd. I think print is still the way to go.

Never done it myself, just my $.02.

$.02 would be a fine investment LOL :)

Anyway, I also think that an online ad posted correctly in a related magazine would also drive traffic. Many people have their own PCs and connection already. If I am the reader of the magazine, if I am interested in the ad, I will surely write the link right away when I see it and check it in the net. It pays to see your ads in print and if the magazine lasts, so is your ad.

$800 for a magazine ad is pretty cheap depending on the mag. It also depends on where and what type of ad you're running. For a full page ad, you can expect to pay over $4700. for a black & white ad, and over $6000. for a color ad. Or you could do a classified ad that'll run you roughly $250 per column inch for black & white, or $310 for color. And as I stated in my earlier post, many magazine's require a three month minium.

Magazine advertising is not cheap. But, if you sell advertising space on your website, that may help you with the costs of the magazine advertising. The more traffic that hits your site, the more your site is advertised in magazines, the more other people/companies will want to advertise on your site. People that advertise on your site will want to know that spending the money on your site is worth it. It's a catch 22. Pay for the advertising that will in return, pay you for advertising.

Yes, word of mouth advertising is good, but it can only take your site so far. How large of a site do you want? How much money do you want to make off of your site? You can pay for web advertising as well, but in the end, I believe having it in print is worth more.

I had a great writeup in a national IT magazine about one of my sites.

It didn't bring me any traffic.

But hey, it was free. :D
