Moderator involvementMichael311 05-18-2006, 02:36 PM Should moderators get into discussions with the users? What do you think? bassnutz 05-18-2006, 04:33 PM Well, that depends on what you mean by discussions. If you mean public reprimanding, then no. But if it's done in a freindly conversation, then hell yeah!! ResaleBroker 05-19-2006, 10:16 AM Normal disucussions? Sure. The moderators might have to bite their tongues a little more than the other members though. ;) Michael311 05-19-2006, 10:55 AM It's a delicate balance, isn't it? It is of good appearance for moderators to show that they are interested in the community. At the same time, it doesn't look good when a moderator starts arguing. bassnutz 05-19-2006, 04:02 PM That's why it's very important when you're choosing members to become moderators. You'd hope that the member is an active part of your community. If you're mods are not doing their job right, other non-mods will be quick to point that out to you. Most forums will form a "personality" on their own depending on the rules you create. But, if your rules are too strict, that may push members away. So yeah, it's a very delicate balance. JTingly 05-19-2006, 06:10 PM Yes, of course, i've been a "glob mod" of some forums, and i had to post in just regular threads just to make myself known. Get myself a reputation, to be known as the "nice guy" and the guy whose gonna provide information. Other than just doing what your supposed to do, get to know people..then thats when you'll truly enjoy the forum. Michael311 05-20-2006, 11:57 AM At the same time, I think that a moderator has to forget about his popularity, when it comes time to bring order. JTingly 05-20-2006, 08:20 PM True, but then it wouldn't be fun while your modding. And, if these mods dont get paid, they usually, leave the board..because it becomes precious time they waste. Susan 05-22-2006, 09:10 AM Hi - It's a delicate balanceGood Point - However it is sometimes necessary for a mod to post to get things in a thread back in order or to add value to the thread. If you have to address a member for violating forum rules or other matters it's best use the pm system and not stir things publicly because this leads to members choosing sides. You should try to remain impartial as a mod. So for me the rule is: If I don't have something nice to say or equitable to the thread it's best not to post at all. Should moderators get into discussions with the users? Absolutely if they have an idea, suggestion or fact to help the member's thread. This way the entire community can benefit. JTingly 05-22-2006, 09:00 PM How about..should moderators get PAID? Maybe, only if your gaining money from the forum itself..but i think they should, or you just end up losing them. It was a waste of my time, and it was pointless volunteer work. arcelt 05-23-2006, 09:57 PM I reserve several user names for myself. One is for official admin business; the others are to join in the community. I suppose that is probably disingenuous and quite possibly evil, but it seems to work so far, and it's pretty fun. | |
