At the time of purchasing a hosting as first you have to choose the platform of the hosting like Windows and Linux. Generally Linux Hosting is far cheaper then Windows. but this is completely dependent on your website development if your site is built using ASP then you have to choose windows server and using PHP then you have to choose Linux server. Many windows server supports Linux also for this you have to read their manual or package includes.

Yes, I have also heard about using Windows or Linux will depend on how your website is built and usually it is LInux for the PHP built sites.

From day one I've gone with Linux - mainly due to it's security over windows. I've still yet to find a single application in ASP that it's alreaddy done in PHP.

I'll add another vote for Linux. Way more versatility than windows hosting.

Hello friends,

Kindly tell wat is the main difference between the Linux server and windows server?

If you're suited for ASP/ASP.net programming environment and like IIS server( Microsoft addict ) lol...then go for a Windows hosting - $$$ ladies and gents ( dont forget the expensive SQL server as well )

But if you're like the 80% of internet hosts running now on apache server and making use of the open source PHP programming language and using SQLite or MysQL as ur backend (which is the most used option these days), then go for Linux hosting

Linux hosting though offer better security and performance and studies have shown numerous security flaws in IIS unlike Apache Web server :)

I don't think it's necessarily that Linux is any more secure than Windows - that has a lot more to do with how the servers are configured and how frequently they are updated (I just recently saw a red Hat server that had not been upgraded since 2001).

To me, the issue is more one of ease of use, versatilitym and flexibility for the end user/webmaster and for that my vote definitely goes to Unix/Linux. I started on a Windows server and I've had no inclination to go back in the past 3 or 4 years since I switched.

I'm with minstrel on this one as well. Linux isnt more secure then windows, and windows isnt any less secure then linux, and vice versa. The server is only as secure as the adminsitrator is capable of securing it.

Its even safe to say that windows hosting is a growing steadly every year and is probably around 30% market share to date. These days most things you can achive on linux machines can be done on windows in some shape way or form. The operating costs are similar unless you want to get the fancy software and even then i'm sure its still close.

So when choosing hosting, it really comes down to what you're specific project needs are, and what they may become later down the road.
