Google's Cache

I know there was a lawsuit about a year ago that ruled Google's Cache did NOT violate copyright. I think that suit was profoundly flawed in many respects. Aside from the legal issues, though, I see other issues with Google's cache, particularly with forums.

Google is needlessly and intentionally vague about the relationship between INDEXING a site, and CACHING a site. So my question is this: if I use the <META NAME="GOOGLEBOT" CONTENT="NOARCHIVE"> tag to prevent caching, will that prevent indexing, as well?

My content is my own. Users who search for a particular term covered in my forum should certainly see my pages in the search results, but to view my content, they need to come to my site.

Has any definitive research been done on this?

From what I've read GoogleBot respects the commands it's given but the other guys would know better than me. :)

Yes, but the question is, does Google differentiate between indexing and caching? An index can be as simple as a table linking a URL to a list of keywords, plus keyword density/relevance, and an entire precise copy of the entire page, intact (cache) isn't required.

But if the Google mechanism is so structured that it CACHES everything, and then INDEXES from the cache, then a "nocache" directive would be tantamount to "noindex". That's certainly the picture Google paints in their FAQ.

I just want to know if it's true. Does the no-cache directive mean the site will no longer be indexed?
