friscogal 09-15-2006, 03:10 PM i would like to make a forum private to more senior members BUT not vendors. I am not sure how to do this. i know i can set a senior user group where a senior member has to post over x-amount to get to that level but how can i exclude people.
or how can i add individual people and not whole groups.

i know that BUT how to i not allow vendors to ever become "senior" members...i know they will post alot but do not want them to have access to the private forum
First you have to create the private forum.
I made a usergroup called "Wedding Addicts" and they can see a private forum that regular registered users cannot see.
For example, I made a member's primary group (in their user profile) as Wedding Addict and their secondary as "Registered User".
Then I went to Forum Permissions and went under that private forum and changed each usergroup (deny all). You will have to go one by one. Then when I got to Wedding Addicts I gave them permission to view, read, blah, blah that private forum.
If you need more help let me know. Be very careful with your permissions.
Coder1 09-15-2006, 04:17 PM Ah, I think I see the problem. Well, how do you define "Vendors" now? I think the question boils down to "how to prevent members of usergroup A from ever becoming members of usergroup B". That may require custom coding.
minstrel 09-15-2006, 04:20 PM Just require Admin approval for that member group - i.e., don't base it on post counts and don't maker it a public group. Then, as Admin, you choose who gets that group membership and only that group membership gets access to the restricted forum.
I have a couple of those active at Psychlinks.

hi minstrel, sorry for sounding dumb but how do i do that..?
how to i individually give people access?
minstrel 09-15-2006, 05:07 PM You just go into your Admin CP, search for that User, and add the special group as a primary or secondary group.
friscogal 09-15-2006, 07:35 PM ok, so you and tanya have the same technique...got it!
Coder1 09-15-2006, 08:45 PM No, Tanya and I have the same technique. ;) Minstrel's is different but will do what you require if you choose to manually administer who has priviliges instead of basing it on post count.
minstrel 09-16-2006, 05:53 AM Yes - I have two special (non-public) groups: MVPs (which is an awarded status for special contributions to the forum) and Practitioners (which is for mental health professionals only to ask questions of or discuss issues with other mental health professionals). That's why they are manually administered. Since people get added to those groups only infrequently, it's not a burden to add a member manually.
I have a special group...once a member hits 100 posts and have been a member for 30 days they get to see the Love, Sex & Intimacy and Mind & Body forums. That's still Registered Users but they become Senior once they hit 100 posts yada yada...
I also have one for Vendors...
Tammy I think you want what I have setup for my Wedding Addicts. It's not complicated at all. I did this all myself. :p

That's true...we manually add people to Wedding Addicts because we don't add to it a lot. Once in the blue.

30 days without Love Sex & Intimacy?

It's a pretty good forum over at B2W ;). The race to 100 posts was crazy so I had to add in the 30 days registered to it. :p
minstrel 09-16-2006, 03:06 PM Maybe you should get someone to read my post to you out loud...

Oops...I applied to the forums and not "offline life" ...sorry! :p

lmao... lol... lol...
friscogal 09-17-2006, 08:48 AM you guys are funny...i did it so i add people manually...it doesn't get to be very many and it is only the beggining part that is work when you have to add a bunch of people but now it will only be 1-2 a month so that shouldnt be too hard.
thanks for everyone's help!
