hmmmm I was told that it was good SEO to purchase extra domains that relate to your site, and point them to your main site. So I'd be interested in the answer to the above question as well.

No, it's not good SEO. It helps to protect your branding but it's either neutral or negative for SEO if it's simply parked.
For example, you own vbulletin-faq.com - if you can secure vbulletin-faq.org, vbulletin-faq.net, vbulletin-faq.info, vbulletin-faq.ca, etc., it stops someone else from cashing in on your branding/success - that may be of some advantage to you.
If you want mutliple domains to help with SEO, you'll need unique content for each domain. Simply pointing it to an existing site will not help at all. Duplicating the content at the additional domains will also not help - and may have a negative impact since Google will apply the duplicate content filter ignoring all but one of the clones and they may not necessarily choose the one you want (although in most cases they seem to identify the oldest/earliest version as the original).
