[How to] change your site's bookmark icon

I have posted this also on the official vbulletin.com site but I though I share it with you too

For the browser to be able to recognize an icon, it needs to be named favicon.ico and placed in the root directory of your forum. On a fresh installation the icon looks like http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/8606/untitledvo0.jpg.

So, how to change it ?

Create an image 16X16 pixels in size. Yes, it is really small and you can't really draw much in it. You should also restrict yourself to the standard Windows 16 colours, although I suspect that 256 colours will work fine.
If you like, you can also create a 32X32 pixel icon, which will be scaled to size for the Favorites menu and the location bar. You can even put both 16X16 and 32X32 pixel icons into the same icon file. Windows will use the former for its menus and the latter when the user opens up a folder that is set to display large icons. It's probably not really necessary to do this if you can't be bothered.
Save the image as an ICO file (named "favicon.ico", of course).
Upload it to your website. You don't need to upload one to every directory of your site if you don't want to waste space - simply put it in your root directory and the browser will apparently locate it eventually.

There are several tools to download to convert BMP, JPG and other to ico files. There is also an online tool which allows you to convert those files into .ico

http://www.htmlkit.com/services/favicon/

And this is how it looks like when you uploaded your personal file :

Once you changed the icon you need to delete your chache to be able to see the new icon.

Once you changed the icon you need to delete your chache to be able to see the new icon.

Or simply hit ctrl+reload.

NOTE: Due to IE being made by microsoft, the icon doesn't always show up.

If you add <link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" > into your index page, youi'll increase the chances of it showing.

CTRL-Reload is also suggested most of the time on vbulletin.com - but it never actually worked for me

to clear you browser cache you have to check the options of the program you're using. If it's Firefox, you have to go to the "Tools" menu, "Options..." command, click on the "Advanced" button, and then click on the network tab. There you will find the cache options for it.

Internet Explorer has the cache options right on the first screen of the Internet options dialog IIRC.

I'm afraid not. You are transferring a file into the public directory of your hosting service. Once you are in the vB software, all changes you make are occuring in the database.

You will need to FTP or upload the file through the hosting control panel, either of which needs permissions set at the site hosting level.

If favicon does not display add this line to your headinclude template (bottom):

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" />

hope it helps,
;)

Okay, so I love this idea, but here's my first dumb question.

Where is my root directory? I didn't set up the domains and servers, so I'm clueless. If I could get a hink on where it normally is in the control panel of my host that would be great. I hope I'm explaining this correctly!

The root directory is most commonly used to identify the directory where all of your site's directories (or folders) reside, which is most commonly known as public_html. It can be confusing, because some people will also refer to the forum root, which is the actual forum directory.

That was very helpfull, was it supposed to change the icon at the favorite list also? Because it didn't.

Any idea how I can change it? Nvm, lol it's simple as deleting and addind the link to your favorites again.

Did you take the time to read the original post?

For the browser to be able to recognize an icon, it needs to be named favicon.ico and placed in the root directory of your forum.

wheres "root directory" ?

Without knowing the structure of your Web site, that's a little difficult to answer.

Is the forum the only thing running on your site? If so, place the favicon in public_html.
