You had installed a hack on vbWebmaster which shows the latest RSS feed message under the username while viewing a thread. Could you please share the same? I would like to apply the same on my forums.

I coded that and to be honest, it was only half baked. But not a bad addition.

I have not pursued it since though. I don't even know where the code is ATM.

Oh!

Is there any similar hack available somewhere? I could not find anything like this on vBulletin.org :(

Not that I'm aware of, but there may be.

I found the code. I used CARP RSS for it. That was way back on vB 3.0.6.

I installed a version of this here. Let's see if it works out.

You can display your blog RSS feed or forum's latest posts by adding a url in your user profile. A link to your lastest post will appear under your name in your posts.

YES! Another webmasters' site that I frequent uses this hack, or one like it that they found at .org, so that members who have a blog can add their rss feed to their profile, and it shows up where you have it here.

I'd love to add this to my site, as many of my members are bloggers

I'm using a paid version of Carp KOI RSS (http://www.geckotribe.com/rss/carp/features.php) for this. I dunno if the free version supports all the stuff necessary to pull this off the way I coded it. It may. You'd need to do the carp install and confirm it works. Then there is a product you install that consists of three plugins, one addition to the postbit template, and one custom profile field.

I didn't intend to release it. Nothing is automated via the ACP for settings. It's really beta code. No support, no testing, but on this and my forum. Hell, it may even break the forum! :D

ah, ok. I'll go to .org and look up the one there that the other webmaster site uses, although I'm not installing anything til after the upgrade to 3.6

I looked at those, and unless things have changed, they have ALOT of overhead.

Link me when ya find one and I'll give ya the low down.

yup, but i could see how this wouldn't be suggested on larger sites if u say the overhead is high

I said the other hacks have overhead. I coded mine to be efficient. But I'm not going to go so far as to say it's perfect yet.

ah, well hopefully you release it at some point :) I'd like to see a lot of boards have this enabled.

Yeah, the thing with those that I've seen though is a call for the RSS with every loop to build the postbit in showthread. I don't like that.

I'm trying caching and batch calls to relieve the overhead. We only go to the well every 60 minutes if necessary to update the cache. Most of the work should be local and remote calls distributed pertty good.

I'm sure you'll wind up being a test forum at some point.

But do you have any links handy for published versions of this idea? I'd like to see them.

No, I mean hacks that do this. I'll do a search and see that folks are doing these days.

Yep, that's about exactly what we had running at VBW that I eluded too as being half baked. He did a good job, but still he does his calls one at a time in the postbit loop. However, he did use caching. So that is a positive.

What I'm testing works about the same, but posts are always populated with the cached version of the members feed. We use cache IDs as well so we can use carp for many different purposes. Then later we update the necessary feed caches in a batch. I'm thinking the busier the forum, the more efficient this method will be.

While you wait, you can install CARP RSS (http://www.geckotribe.com/rss/carp/). Then ya will be able to do this mod very easiliy.

The install is something you can handle I'm certain. Then the rest is vB stuff you already know. If I make you do it yourself, I'll know better what I need to supply help and instruction wise.

unless you're scared? :D

Aaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggghhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Too funny. Where are you stuck?

Make a folder above, in the same folder as, pubic_html. (ie. /home/account/carp )

Set the attributes of the folder to 777.

Upload the files to the carp folder.

Upload the install file to your web folder, public_html, and run it.

Delete the install file.

You should be done.

In case you're wondering what's taking so long, I've been waiting for the past hour for the email confirmation, to download carp.

I hope this is going to work with the free version

But I'm thinking perhaps it would be wise to wait til we upgrade to 3.6, to do this. Yes?

Unless you know that the postbit loop in showthread was rewritten or the hooks moved, I don't see any reason to wait.

Did you check you spam or junk folder for the reply?

Loco, as for not touching it. What reason would you cite for that having never seen the code?

I just received another email from them asking me to submit another email address, lol. I just did and am doing the download now.

The free version won't do DB IIRC. In any event, we're using file caching. The default install should create the writable cache folder structure on install.

Very good.

Now make a custom user profile field. Single input box. Editable, do not show in member profile. Write down the number of it or PM me admin access.

We also need the path to the carp file. /home/account/carp is what it should look like.

You're all set. Good job!

Now let's get those members linked and see how they do. The end users are the weakest link. Here with admins, we can expect success due to an expected level of knowledge. Regular end users may require help.
