madkad 10-23-2006, 06:45 AM Hi
I like to think of my self as a nice person and love to offer people as much as they want, but when it comes to getting moderators and keeping them I must do something wrong some where.
I have just removed a list of moderators that havent been back to my website for a long time, at the start they seemed to all be happy and help me out with our forum, but now they have just given up.
The moderators we have left also seem to have started doing the same, and its becoming hard work to stop spammers etc etc on my own.
How do you all get good moderators and manage to keep them coming back and helping?
is there a forum for people that aply to be moderators so people like us can go and take them on?
I know for me, if my staff and members do not see me or my Admins on they will not log on. I don't know what that's about, but I'm always logged on and I'm constantly coming with new material which keeps the interest up. I also have a hidden forum for them and we have folders and everybody gives ideas as to what to post and the like. It's hard to explain.
So you're not logged into your board all the time? When are you on? Have you played around with the Infraction system in regard to spammers?
madkad 10-23-2006, 07:17 AM hmm this is strane :(
I long in nearly 24x7 as working on the internet is my life.
we also have a hiddon mod section, and now use the infractions system and that is something I think is a great idea.
I try and post good and new info all the time but doesnt seem to work :(
Dave A 10-23-2006, 08:17 AM I don't need mods yet so for me in a forum environment I can't really comment much. But I've been involved with a number of enterprises where participation is voluntary.
My quick thoughts:
I think your key people need to feel part of the team.
They need to be "paid" somehow - not necessarily in money, but in recognition.
Read some John Maxwell on Leadership.
Maybe a starting point?
Big Dan 10-23-2006, 09:10 AM I have other admin, 2 supermods and about 5 moderators. Getting moderators wasn't a problem. I only offered an admin position and 1 mod position. All others asked me.
Its hard to figure out who to trust and who has their own agendas. I don't micro-manage people, they know the community guidelines and should moderate accordingly. I had problems with a few mods permanetly deleting posts, I locked down permissions so only the other admin & I can remove posts from the DB. Then we had an issue with threads being deleted so I created a subforum in the staff forum to move threads gone a-rye into.
I did moderate at one forum for a little bit but stopped visiting because I was doing all the posting. It seemed like the admin setup the software added advertisements, bumped a few people up to moderator positions and left us on our own. I'm more than happy to help anyone but they need to show some enthusiasm & effort. At least make a post with ongoing improvements.
Here's how I would go about approaching moderators if I was to do it from scratch again. Start out with just yourself as an admin than watch people's posts, see who really supports your forums and is knowledgeable about the topics at hand, then approach them but don't beg.

I agree! We were forced to make our own board because of this.
Oh and I only give permissions to move and close threads. That's it.
And I have to micro-manage. :p
madkad 10-24-2006, 01:37 AM yes some good thoughts here nice one, I will give this all some really good thought my self and see what I can do, lol I think some one out there should make a moderator requruitemnt forum :) as this would come in handy for forum owners :D

I wouldn't want to be responsible for that! :p
Hell³ 10-24-2006, 09:35 AM The first thing you have to let your would-be moderators know is that it is a job like any other out there. And sometimes it will have them burning the candle at both ends, especially in busy communities. Some people will understand that right away, but the mayority of people is unaware of all the work that will start to go their way.

OT...my DH enounces "majority" just like you...with a "y". :p
Big Dan 10-24-2006, 10:03 AM I have to agree my moderators are all very good but some want to have their own little following within the community. :*{
Hell³ 10-24-2006, 10:04 AM LOL, I guess it was my spanish speaking mind creeping in :P

Aye, my DH is Dominican. I laugh at him everytime he says it. It makes him smile. :)

What do you mean, own following? I have one that's a real attention seeker and loves to disappear. So annoying.

You don't have permission to access /admincp/moderator.php on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
how can i solve this problem ..

You don't have permission to access /admincp/moderator.php on this server.
That would be because moderator.php is not in the admincp folder.
You set moderators via the admin control panel.

I am try to find my moderator .php and still at admincp directory , any suggestion ...... :o
Dave A 10-31-2007, 12:11 AM I'm struggling to understand the problem - if you're an admin or moderator the links in the footer bar should take you right there. The only person who might interested in the exact path would be a hacker.
towermatt 12-21-2007, 02:42 PM To the original question:
I think you have to find people who are passionate about your forums subject. When I was setting up a Stephen King fan site, I found Stephen King fans. Serious ones.
That and treating them with respect without micromanagement is what seems to work for me.
popowich 12-21-2007, 05:02 PM Make moderators of the frequent posters who show a genuine interest in the success of the site.

workers are just hard to find, good workers are rare, hard workers, just not going to happen :)

Who wants to sit around deleting spam all day?
Install some of the most effective anti-spam products. NoSpam (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=124828) is a good one.
Let the moderators spend their times interacting with the community and doing things like move threads to the correct forums, keeping the peace and the site on track, etc. :D
Also, the occasional "thank you" goes a long way to making them feel appreciated.

Steve B 09-04-2008, 03:50 AM I think the first think you need to consider is who actually make the best moderators, not who is willing to do the job...
All our mods where chosen on a basis of dedication to the site, interest in our topic and their common sense, mental ability and coolness with regard to dealing with issues and debates that occasionally flare up in the public side of our site. We have no moderators under the age of 30 (not due to age rules) but its the way it turned out. Youngsters tend not to be able to meet our requirements and luckily our member base is also fairly mature so we have a good selection to chose from.
We let the moderators guide the direction of the site and that free's the admins up to look after the business (advertising, promotion, server issues etc). The moderators feel they actually have some input, that they are listened to and can make a difference, it is one way for us to reward them. Both admins spend at least 8-12 hours on the site a day and take an active part in the content, management and giving our opinions when requested. We also are available through IM when ever we are online.
Also the admins very rarely get involved with the daily moderating decisions, leaving that to the mods and again making them feel valuable, we push team work and encourage them to support each other. We even let them over rule admin suggestions with regard to daily decisions..things like new forum sections, members behaviour, trouble posts etc but only if there is a majority agreement within the moderation team. they understand we have fianl say but in the whole time we have had the site only once have we over rulled a moderating team decision.
Additionally we take the moderation team out once a year for the weekend, paying for their food, drink. It is our way of thanking them for their work, effort and time. It brings them all together and does away with the issues that writing online can sometimes cause. Face to face interactions are always more productive, especially over a few beers, plus it gives them a chance to have a playful whine and dig at our members and other members of staff (admin included).
