1. it makes for a very slow loading page

2. at 800 x 600 it is twice as wide as the rest of the forum page

You need to cut down the size considerably. I'd recommend resizing it to a max 780 pixels wide which would then also shrink the height to a manageable level.

Patience. Post on appropriate forums and put a link to your forum in your signature.

Create interesting topics yourself so that people arrive at your forum it looks busy.

In 4 days, we have 11 members and 760+ posts. How's that for a start?

Not bad. You'll find that most forums have a "critical mass". Membership tends to increase slowly at first until around 500 members and then it picks up. When you hit about 1000 or so, you'll see it pick up a bit more. At that point, you can usually expect a decent steady rate of new members per week.

Then the trick is to keep them active.
