DMOZ technical difficulties.

A short note to report that DMOZ is experiencing technical difficulties and is currently not taking listing submissions. Apparently the problem has been since 25th October and resolution date is unkown.

That's correct.

On the other hand, they weren't really ever taking "submissions" - they called them "suggestions" and it typically took months or years before anyone looked at them.

In other news, it turns out that most of the world isn't aware that DMOZ is down because they didn't realize that DMOZ ever existed.

Nope - they are not saying..

As of 10/25/06

We are currently experiencing technical problems with our servers. Currently the public pages are static pages that have been generated from a backup. This means:

(1) the public pages do not reflect the most recent updates made to the directory;

(2) scripted pages, including site suggestion and application forms, are not functioning; and

(3) editors are unable to check the status of new editor applications.

We do not currently have an ETA for the resolution of the technical difficulties. We will update this announcement when the system is fully functioning again -- please do not start threads asking why the system isn't working properly or when it will be available again. Thanks.

This is the message still today if you try to submit anything, but there's nothing temporary about it. We're heading toward a second month now.

Service Temporarily Unavailable

We apologize for the inconvenience while we resolve technical problems. Please check back in a day or two.

Suggestions:

If you are an editor, please visit the editor forums to find out the status of the editing interface.

If you are submitting a site, updating a listing or applying to become an editor, please check back here regularly. If you have any questions about submitting sites or becoming an editor, please visit the public forums where members of the editing community are available to answer your questions.

If you want to report abuse or spam, please send feedback to staff@dmoz.org
Thank you for your patience!

That seems like a long time to be having server problems? If they are as quick at getting things fixed as they are at approving sites then you can expect DMOZ to be back up in about 2 - 5 years time or even longer than that.

My guess - ODP is undergoing massive changes in structure and management - all behind the scenes. Policies are being written, etc.

There could also be major changes to the structure of the website itself. Automated submissions for example, where your emailed when your listing is acted upon for example.

Maybe a complete overhaul.

Fact is - they could restore a backup and be completely functional in 24 hours. There has to be more we're not being told.

Made me laugh!!! :D - That would be very sad.

I hope you're right.
