Preparing for the fallout

We all enjoy watching the goings-on at .org. Many of us are refugees, and carry some old baggage from there, to here. I'm struggling to make a clean start and shed any resentments and attitudes that were developed there. The .org a strange place, and I'm sure perceptions are skewed.

That aside, one of the most contentious issues there, the private coder's discussion, will soon get a "Town-hall" thread. I plan to argue my case, as will many others.

If .org administration handles this right, they'll consider opinions and make a decision. I'll live with it, either way. But there is bound to be fallout, with people upset, pulling their hacks, leaving... and ending up here.

Two things:

1. Leave your baggage behind. If you couldn't stand someone there, and they end up here, bury the hatchet, pretend you just met, move on.

2. Joey - I think the staff here needs to decide, in advance, how to handle some of the more fractious issues, such as hacks, coder titles, private forums, thread moderation style, etc. Decide now before the floodwaters open!

My unsolicited, never humble opinion!

I'd love to know what you think you are missing. There really are no topics about you in there ;)

In fact, in the last week there have barely been a dozen posts, and all just mundane vb stuff. :)

The staff here has pretty much already discussed most, if not all, of those issues and know where we stand.
I don't see alot of coders, etc leaving the org to end up here. However if they do, they'll be welcome with open arms, as anyone else is.

Paul - I'm not missing anything; I have access to the private Coders Discussion. So should everyone. But like I said, I'm not bringing those issues here.

And if the need arises, we can put together a hack distribution system pretty quickly. If the several coders here wanted to release some of their hacks here, it could start something big.

I think that it would be a good idea to put that together now Joey. I know of at least one person looking for a place to post his free modifications, and someone else may be releasing a few new free styles in the not-too-distant future. May as well release them here, don't you think?

I'd contribute my hacks here.

What constutes the hack DB anyway?

What things should be on the input form?
What should the post look like.
What should the thread look like.

Are we talking vB.org clone here?

I hope you folks don't take this the wrong way but I feel compelled to put my 2 cents in:

1 - vb.org will get straitened out I predict

2 - the thing that makes .org unique is the ability to verify vb licenses before downloading hacks and styles...from a piracy perspective thats a big plus (albiet it isn't a cure all, it helps alot). You will never find me or any other stylist I know releasing their designs for free anywhere but there.

3 - the final point I want to make as a outside observer of events there and here is that it seems to me a geniune effort has been made on the part of some members of this site to cause controversy at the org...that has left me with the impression your efforts have had a underlying desire to drive traffic from there to here. If that is the case, that sucks. If not, I apologize...but it sure looks that way to me and alot of others I know. Who cares if there is a private forum over there? I sure don't. Who cares if the staff has a bias? I sure don't. As long as the needs of the community are met (and they will be met eventually), thats all that matters...these other issues are a distraction. I think whether or not there has been any "motive" on the part of the members here in your activity there, your efforts have been divisive and unproductive and quite frankly, they don't speak well of you.

There was one point, and as you point out, all licenses are tied to support. All vb.com questions about code are referred to .org and you need a license to go there.

The point is, every license holder is entited to access to all of the forums and information at .org by buying a license. There should be no special hoops for anyone to jump through to see all of the information available only to license holders.

If you have another agenda, fine. Mine is and was always very clear. I don't need people flocking here, I have my own sucessful site that I make loads of money off of and can freely advertise at .org because it's a vb forum. Have I promoted this or my forum in my efforts to get fair access for all at .org? No.

That being said, I've had PM converstaions with those involved at .org and removed my rants about it. Nothing to see here anymore. They will handle the issue as they see fit with what is on the table.
