I am wondering what kind of income people are generating from their forums.

How much time do you spend on your website ?
How much income do you generate ?

My estimate is you need about 10,000 visitors a day to generate about $30 worth of revenue. Does this sound about right?

I am in the process of setting up a new business forum and I will post my url soon once it's live.

Appreciate any input.

Well, I dont like saying what I earn. Lets say this. It wouldnt pay for me to go out and get a job. I would lose money.

That's GREAT news! Very motivating. I know you don't want to reveal your earnings but can you give me an idea of how long it took to go from $0 (I assume you started from scratch) to say $1000 revenue/month.

Themouthpiece is a nice board. Lot's of action going on over there.

How long have you had your board?
Did you start off with virtual hosting? I am going to go with AsmallOrange for starters (gets a lot of good reviews)
How many hours a day do you spend on your board ?

I have a number of revenue streams. Adsense, Direct Ad sales, memberships, t-shirts, link sales, etc.

Took me about 6 months to get there. 2.5 years into things, I make that much from just one revenue stream.

How many hours a day do you spend on your board ?Thanks. Yes, I started with a shared plan and grew from there really. I moved from oneandone to ASmallOrange.com onto their shared plans, then onto a dedicated server, and more recently onto a super dooper owned Dual Core server hosted with ASO.

tMP has been going for 3.5 years. We don't have a massive audience though as the market for brass players is a little restricted. I'd love to attack the US market though - we have a predominantly UK based userbase at the moment which I desperately want to change.

Well I ordered my Vbulletin License and I've signed up with ASO so today I will try to install everything and get things going. Actually I am still trying to decide on a name! A good available domain is hard to find.

3.5 years is a nice running start. Wish I was at the 3.5 year mark. Wonder why your UK base is so big vs your US base ?

Probably because he is a UK citizenNot really Peggy, it's mainly because the brass band movement is predominantly and traditionally a British one.

We have some eccellent emerging bands and brass groups in the USA, from Florida to Chicago - and we are always picking up a few US members here and there, but I'd seriously love more of you guys to find out about us, see that we are a good reference for all things brass, and sign up.

There are two really good brass bands that I went to hear when I lived in Florida. I can't remember their names now, it's been a few years. But WOW... holy cow, they were good.

I dont want to disapoint you, but you either have had to be around for a while and have a large client/member base, sell your selves and sites out and place adds all over the place (real cool), or have a great idea to make any real good money on the web today...Ive been trying to make a living for the past few years, Ive made some real good money doing custom programing, web design, and hosting, styling VB's and admining them...but honestly, I make more money/more of a living working at my real job. I dont make a whole lot there, but its steady, pays the bills, and its ALOT better than sitting behind my computer for three years. I am not willing to sell out and put adds all over my sites, all of the people I know have had to to stay afloat...go for it if you want...It wont be easy, but it can be done...good luck and sorry for my spelling atm...real tired and one handed, dont ask...

Yes, you have to sell ads - no way around that. That is the big moneymaker for websites. So if you want to make money that is a comprimise you have to make.

I have a couple of sites that cover things i'm interested in, others were created to really help make some money with google adwords and banners once they take off. I use banners systems to but all in all, i've made around £200 since 2004 including donations ;-(

My problem is advertising, I just can't afford to splash out and rely on word of mouth and links in sigs, etc.

At the moment, I don't display any ads. So I make nothing.
But I have received 50 dollars in donations.
