Well it's good to see after advocating CURL for so long, it's been adopted by vBulletin.

Now if we can get the DP coop to use it, we're in good shape.

what, exactly, is cURL?

what, exactly, is cURL?

CURL is a PHP class that enables you to fetch remote file and anything that happens with the connection can be dealt with by the internal code rather then having to create and open file handles and deal with responses and such. CURL just delivers the data.

That's a nutshell...

libcurl (the library behind the PHP cURL extension) currently supports a wide range of protocols, including HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, TELNET, FILE, LDAP, DICT, GOPHER and HTTPS, as well as HTTPS certificates, HTTP POST, HTTP PUT, FTP uploading, HTTP form based upload, proxies, cookies, and user:password authentication. There are alternatives for some of these, such as streams, sockets or the FTP extension, but cURL is the master of them all - they are less flexible, and don't perform as well.

so this has to do with the rss feed? or am I offbase still?

Yes, they are pulling the remote RSS with curl. It makes for a much neater call on various systems like linux vs. windows.

It's a way to go "get" something off of the web, to use how you please, without having to worry about all the "web plumbing" required for your server to actually talk to "their" server.

cURL is to PHP what SOAP is to ASP.NET... sort of.

SOAP is a nice cross platform API. I use SOAP in my FREEBS Amazon Book Store (http://www.riderinfo.com/) Software.

There's not nearly as many bugs found in this version (yet)

I was reading the bug tracker today because of a couple of bugs we seem to have found. Anyway, I found this conversation where a coder suggests better code, yet for some reason, it seems to be rejected for older coding. I hope the members that posted can get their point across and implemented rather then wait for another rewrite in vB4.0. The code discussed appears to be outdated javascript used in vB.

As for our bug, the system we found them in is a laden with bugs and there are some fixes in CVS for the next release, so I didn't report my specific problems. There were a few bugs that seemed to me may make them address our issue, so I'll wait and see what happens.

It's been a week since the last beta release, so it's just about time for another one. However, with the recent downtime, I'm thinking that could delay it by a day or two... or 5.
