VB Web Hosting

I am a Sr. UNIX Systems Admin for a fairly large phone company and have been thinking about getting some dedicated servers so I can provide VB forum hosting as a side project at one of our hosting locations. I figure I can get a special rate, can admin the servers, and help with VB upgrades/hacks for beer money as needed for clients. I'm not so good at actual web page programming though (read: hacking away at php files). Anyways, what would people who are looking for good service and support be willing to pay per month for this type of service? This would be a standalone server and not a load balanced highly redundant server farm. Am I nuts, or is this something that people who have had previous bad hosting experiences be interested in?

I think you will find that alot of people will be interested, as long as their monthly $ output is in line with, or not too much more than, what they're paying now.

My questions are...

Would you provide cPanel, Plex, or both?
email accounts within the hosting account?
mysql databases?
Domain hosting?I'm sure I'll think of more later :)

Gotta have cPanel - Anytime I see a host without cPanel, I view them as second rate.

I have to agree. I tested out plex... I don't like it at all

Cpanel, WHM is most popular... if he can keep the servers update-to-date with
all the latest software and security, he could load all sorts of goodies onto the server...
cpanel, whm, fantastico, emails, mysql databases, other db support, addon domain support, and it would be up to him on how much he wants to give to a user, the more the better.

in all reality, forums over all do not make a lot of money, and many do not
make anything, so it is understadable they will not be willing to spend a lot
of money either....unless the forum is bring in the $$$ they will want the
cheapest but most reliable hosting as possible..

It really depends on what kind of forum you have (meaning the theme, what you're doing with it). If it's a business, then you should be able to expect it to make $. If it's a hobby site, then no, most likely it won't.

It also depends on the marketing strategy, SEO, investment of time and $, among other things.

TBH, my 2 sites are doing rather well :D

David your forum hasn't open to the public for very long, has it? I've been working just about day and night on my design site for almost a year, and Top vBulletin since the beginning of December. Come to think of it, Top vB has been successful a whole lot faster than I ever dreamed it would be.

All I can say is it's been work work work...

I complained to my hosting that my site goes up and down.
he said there is nothing wrong... I see the problem when i
cant access my site, but i can access the rest of the world...

If someone is planning on hosting a business, a shared hosting account is not recommended for many reasons, unless it's a mom and pop site that is mostly html based. I host several forum communities, a few small business sites, and several 'home' users sites. I'd like to recommend you check out my offerings at http://funwehost.com .

I'm shocked to read that some of you view web hosts that don't provide cPanel as second rate. Most customers want a simple point and click control panel, and my customized CP provides that. Feel feel to take a walk through and demo the CP, I'm sure you'll find it very straightforward. As far as cPanel features, how many scripts besides a forum or picture gallery really get used? You'd be shocked how underutilized it is. I provide Fantastico, which fits most needs.

Have a nice day!
