Avatar and profile picture sizes are set by usergroups.
Go into your Admin CP
Scroll down to Usergroups and click
on the right, choose the usergroup, select edit in dropdown menu, and click Go.
scroll down to Picture Uploading Permissions. Here you can enable or disable avatars and profile pics.
Many forums have multiple usergroups and use them as a "reward" for posting. Meaning when you reach a certain number of posts, you're promoted to the next usergroup, and have more permissions. (You'll have to use the promotions feature, but that's another tutorial).
For the purpose of this tutorial, enable or disable the avatar, set the desired image size (some use 80 x 80 which I hate. I usually start with 100 x 100) and file size. Do the same for the profile picture.
If you do have multiple usergroups, go to your next usergroup and follow the instructions above.
