Paying Moderators

Is it normal to pay moderators for their work?

It would depend on the forum. If it is a business that has full time mods then maybe. But I can not seeing that ever being done. I mean your mods are usually members that enjoy your forum and wanna volunteer to help it out.

So in short no I wouldn't ever see paying a mod, not full time anyways. You might do it just for a hack install or an upgrade they do for you if you want.

Or a christmas or birthday bonus as a way of saying "thanks for your help", but I've never paid a mod a salary.

I'll amend my statement above to say that if your site is one that is going to be bringing you an income, then yes, I can see sharing the revenue a bit, since they are doing some of the work. That seems only fair.

If my site was making money, I'd be apt to pay moderators something. Since it isn't, I give them goods. I host two mods websites.. It's not much but it's something.

That's a very good idea Danny.

Good idea Danny Boy I'd do that for my mods if they wanted one... though, I've asked, and none of them want a site so *shrug*

I have given them email addresses from my domain (though only two use them), and for the better part full access to the paid members section...whether they've given money or not (time is often more valuable then money anyway).

We sent a handful of them some homemade jams, Russel Stover chocolates, and other little tid bits as well...though it's a pretty new site, so we don't have a lot to give yet. Someday, if I have a million members I may send them more, but as it stands, I'm not even getting paid ;)

Another nice "payback" is to install the webtemplates hack and offer each of them a personal webpage. You don't have to give up the hosting space, they don't have to deal with the responsibility of a website.

They can use it to blog, post pics, just about anything.

Indeed if it makes you money you should probably share it with those that help you make it. If you're not in a profitable position just remember to take care of them in a more social sense. Bigging them up in front of the crowd will always make them feel special. Little things like that, showing your appreciation will go a long way.

I've done some work for professional sites, and yes, I get paid.

As mentioned above it depends on the site.

But remember, you get what you pay for. It really does depend on the community as to whether or not that's worth it.

Admins who help out should be paid millions :) simple as that.

Yes, I agree.

In reality, I don't know any forum that pays it's moderators, allthough I suppose vb.com is close as the mods are Jelsoft Staff - but they are paid to provide support, not moderate.

I get paid to moderate right now. I'm a site admin too, but the majority of my presence is spent moderating.

We don't pay our moderators currently but give them a little back in the way of hosting their websites for free. Our site is currently not making a great deal on money but that trend is changing and as funds become available we hope to be able to give a little back to the team that helped us get there.

I couldn't run my board without the moderators. I send them gift cards for Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas and then just every once in a while based on performance. If a mod is on the board constantly and doing a great job I'll slip a Walmart gift card into a card and drop it in the mail for her. The gift cards that I send for performance are not discussed on the board. The gift cards are usually $20.

I like that idea FSHD. I only have a new board but without my mods that have helped me get a lot of content in, I wouldn't be to the stage I am already. I would like to show them my appreciation at least in a small way, even if they don't expect anything more then to in the future see the board as the number one place for immigration resources.

On their Birthday I used to give them about 5 dollars and a domain name...just to show how appreciative I was. :)

I recently found that the Walmart Photo Center offers some pretty neat things.

One of the things I've been thinking about is buying some post cards with my site logo on them and then using them as thank you letters. They only cost $0.84 each with free in-store pickup.

Another thing I was thinking of was buying some gift cards with my site logo and offering them to a few of the more outstanding mods & super mods. The gift cards cost $0.88 (+ the amount you add to them).

They also offer coffee cups, magnets, and other nifty things that we all love to enjoy.

The only real downside would be, it's wal*mart ;)

Your mods do admin work?

No, that was just a comment if they do something like that for you.
